nppenred nnd the bidding was lively.
The cargo consists of 11,770 cases of
Cartridges; fi44 cases of guns and

WASHINGTON, March 20. Lieu

Herman Schroder of the German in
terned crews ut Philudelphiu navy
yard are believed to have been
drowned lust night in an attempt to
escape.
Eight other men who escaped ot
tho same time have been captured by
companies of marines nnd the Phila
delphia police. These nro in addition
to the seven who were reported last
night ns having failed to escape.
Fourteen men were concerned in
the attempt to escape. Officials feel
certain that the dash was known to
the German officers and that the
men, led by Lieutenant Chorth, made
it with the sanction of the comman
ders. Four men were captured while
Attempting to leave their ship. The
crews of the Kronprinz Wilhelm nnd
tho Pritiz Eilbel Friedrich were at
once mustered nnd it was found that
the lieutenant and nine men were
missing. Compnnies of marines were
at once dispatched in pursuit, the
police reserves nnd civil authorities
aiding in the chase. How the eight
taken were found, the preliminary
report did not show and it does not
show what evidence there is to sup
port the supposition that the lieuteu
nut nnd one mnn were drowned.
All (he men interned at Philadel
phia, ore to bo transferred this week
to Forts Mcl'herson and Oglethorp,
Georgia, where they will be kept in
stockades and guarded by troops of
.tho 17lh infantry.

masked armed men entered a room
in tho store building of the Chichn
goff mines, Chichiigoff island at
1:15 yesterday morning, gagged two
men sleeping in tho room and stole
gold bars valued at $20,000. The
robbers were tracked a short dis
tance, hut all traco of them was then
lost.

AMSTERDAM, March 20 A tele
gram received here from Frnnkfort-on-the-Miiin,
says that on March 10
a hostile airplane flew over the town
and dropped six small bombs, one of
which slightly damaged the roof o
a house. The others fell in the river
or in fields, and caused no damage.
The airplane was fired on by unti
(lircraft guns.
The French war office announced
on Saturday that Frankfort-on-tho-Main
had been bombarded by a
French airplane in reprisal for the
setting afire of Hapaume.

great square, had been taken away
by the Germans and a gaudily clad
dummy left in its stead.
Station Wrecked.
The railroad station was complete
ly wrecked including the tra-jks and
crossing bridges. German signs had

behind to show their occupancy of
the French military barracks. In
some of the rooms Christmas trees,
gaily decorated with the tinsel were

libraries had been wrecked, the books
torn to pieces and scattered in 'the
streets.
The Germans had left several foot
bridges ncoss the Somme which were
apparently intact, but on, closer ex
amination showed that fnlse sections
had been inserted which gave way at
the first foot pressure. The cor
respondent, investigating one of
these bridges too closely, had an icy
bath in the ijoinme. On the blank
walls of the city there were many
printed proclamations to the soldiers
including the entire text of some of
Chancellor Von Bethniann-Hollweg's
later speeches in the reichstag.
At a chateau just outside Peronne
the Germans had killed two magpies
