FOUR YEARS MORE OF WILSON
PARTISAN differences have leen forgotten. President
Wilson is again in office for a four-year term he is
your president and my president, whether we voted for him
or not, the chosen of a majority of the people, and his hands
must he upheld liy all the people.
At the outset of his new term, in the midst of an inter
national crisis, he has heen betrayed by a small coterie of
senators who, through the .stupid machinery of senate laws,
have been enabled to block the course of legislation and
place the country in a false'light before the world by refus
ing to uphold him in his defense of American rights. The
president begins his second term, carrying the heaviest
load of responsibility that any president of the United
States lias ever carried, .with
Washington and Lincoln.
During the president's first term, his internal policy
has been one of constructive progrcssivism, an honest and
determined eltort to apply real
has not hesitated to smash precedent and to make use of
the full power of his office to
porate Jus program into laws.
To free the business activities of the nation from the
sinister domination of a powerfullv .entrenched group of
uauKing anu nuiusiriai capitalists, to tne end that tliere be
a more equitable distribution of the tremendous wealth
production, without destroying or handicapping business
organization ami ellort, Jias
purpose.
J n the midst ol the president s first term the European
war, which has since assumed such terrific proportions, be
gan. As the conflagration spread, first, threatening to in
volve and finally actually involving the vital interests of
this country, more and more of the president's time,
thought, and effort have had to be centered, upon the inter
national situation. Circumstances beyond control seem to
be forcing the United States into the frightful cataclysm
of the world war, the greatest, tragedy in the history of
the human race.
With patience, almost superhuman, against the. pres
sure of forties so great, that few men could have withstood
it, President Wilson has kept his pledge to the nation to
avow war at any cost save that
honor.
Finally when Germany forced him to make the fateful
decision between a dishonorable peace and the defense of
American rights and lives, even at the cost of war, the
president showed that his patience was not cowardice.
The promptness and firmness with which he met the
ruthless German challenge and his refusal to retreat one
inch from his position are the best, proofs we could have or
wish to have of the superb quality of the Americanism of
the man wc have chosen to lead us during the next four
years.
. Whatever our destiny, the wisdom, patience and cour
age during the past four years, of tho man who has again
taken the oath as president, speak louder than words as to
the fundamental principles which Mill inspire his leadership.
LANE MISREPRESENTS OREGON
TF the recall applies to United States senators, Harry
Lane should be recalled for his action in preventing the
president from being given powers to protect American
rights ami for his unpatriotic expressions for peace at the
price ol surrender ol. all American rights at Germany s dic
tation. The Oregon constitution reads:
Kvorv public officer In Oregon is subject, as herein nroviilerl. toTcrall
liy tho legal voters of tho state or of
elected.
llowoer, as a United States senator is not a public
officer in Oregon, but a federal officer who administers the
federal government, and as the senate is made the exclus
ive judge of the election and qualification of its members,
and their term is fixed by the federal constitution, it is
probable that the recall does
All ol which is unfortunate, lor Senator Lane never has
represented Oregon. Erratic and eccentric, he has been
regarded as a lightweight and a good deal of a joke at
Washington, but when he acts as he has in the national
crisis, advocating a national
at any price save that of actual arinet invasion, and cham
pioning the cause of the nation's enemies, he becomes a
sorry joke, indeed.
Senator I jane does not think the United States has any
neutral rights on the seas, says we should "preserve our
neuirainy iv leiitng i iiem tight it out, and that it "is not
gootl sense lor us to intrude in
fry, he asserts, can "get along
