TIME TO TEST YOUR
THERMOMETERS
In about a mouth the frost season
will again be at hand and we should
prepare for it now so as to have
everything in readiness. One impor
tant mutter Is to know- that the ther
mometers are reading accurately
which can only be ascertained by
comparison with a tested thermome
ter. .Usually thermometers costing
one dollar or moro are tested at tho
factory and the corrections can be
seen on oc side of the tube as a
check In the glass, usually appeuring
at tho 2-32-C2- and 92 degree read
ings. Thermometers deteriorate with
age and It it always advisable to have
them tested after each season's use
The bureau of standards ut Wash
ington, D. C, tests thermometers at
a cost of twenty-five cents each or
two dollars per dozen. Those not
wishing to go to this expense can
have It done ut the County Patholo
gist office free of charge us was done
last year. All wishing to have ther
mometers tested will confer a favor
by bringing I hem to the offleo as
soon as possible. It takes nearly as
long to test a few ns a large number
so that It will be n saving of time to
us nnd further the work can be done
whenever convenient. Cheap ther
mometers are unreliable and should
be discarded. Undoubtedly many
crops have been lost because of a
thermometer reading too high and
useless smudging done because the
thermometer read too low. Reliable
thermometers can be purchased for
ahout one dollar and twenty-five
cents up.

COPPER DAY IS
7ly W. W. WATSON.
Never have the people of Southern
Oregon and Northern California been
buoyed with the hope, more warrant
ably entertuiued, that the period of
permanent revival of the mining in
dustry in this region is at hand. In
truth, it has already begun in three
of the principal districts in this vi
cinity, so fur as it may be done 111 the
fact of winter conditions, and the
promise is apparent that, as soon
as the snow shall have disappeared
from the surrounding foothills, it
will quickly assume an air of busi
ness activity never before realized
in equal volume in this territory.
Conditions arc rapidly assuming a
spring-time phase in the Blue Ledge
district. Many miners are ready to
begin extensive work as soon as they
may profitably get busy. The cinna
bar excitement In the Itrownshoro sec
tion has served to cover the entire
known mineralized area with claims.
Conditions that will permit active de
velopment work are awaited with anx
iety.
Other Districts Heady.
The tSylvanlto region on Rogue
river, above Gold Illll, has been fair
ly active all winter, barring n few
weeks of Inclement weather. Much
preparation has been made there for
the most extensive development work
ever done in that region. The Crave
creek region has been a scene of under-ground
activity all winter. Prepa
ration is In full drive for out-of-door
work as soon as conditions may per
mit It.
In the Gold Hill district, in add!
Hon to the work for which prepara
tion was made last fall and which
was prosecuted during the winter
months under-ground, promises re
newed activity on a larger scale than
for years. The prospect of a sniel
ter in this region in the near future
had'much to do with this revival of
interest in milling -properties gen
erally. )
The Jacksonville Aiva.
The Opp mine is tho principal
property in the Jacksonville district
Much worli has been done therein
during the winter months, but a good
deal of it has been merely prepara
tory to unusual operation to begin in
the early spring. This property
well equipped with machinery and
processes for the biggest run in its
history, not alone In gold and silver
extraction, but in the utilization of
by-products in which it has already
established a record. The payroll in
that mine during the present year
will probably he n welcome surprise
to Medford. whoso people have so
long looked toward Heaven for the
appearance of payroll pennants. They
will bo found to be of the earth;
earthy and tho Opp mine will give
them a practical demonstration of
that fact.
Ashland hopes to figure in the pay
roll benefits this yenr nnd will prob
ably have a good report for the big
edition of The Mail Tribune.
Delay Is Necessni-j
The prolonged reign of Hurras dur
ing the past two months throughout
the. entire coast country, in this part
of which he has made his presence
felt in an uncommon degree has
served to delay even the first blush
of spring. The fruit buds have wise
ly remained enwrapped in their win
ter shroud. In which fact the orchard
ists find cause for congratulation.
The miners, yielding to t he same
warning, have impatiently discussed
their plans over the embers or the
grate for a month during which they
are usually busy otherwise.
Therefore, the committee having in
charge the matter of determining the
date of Copper day and the important
events that should follow It in the
.Mineral Development league's work
will probably yield to the sumo con
ditions und delay the date of that
eventuality of the Initial work for
a month. It is generally believed
that conditions contributing to its
success will be developed in better
form In that time. Activity in the
mineral disricts will then have been
resumed and accounts of the work
will have a special Interest that can
not now he given them.
Fred MePhcrson of Eagle Point
spent Friday afternoon in the city at

SUITE I and 2 OVER MAY CO.
IN THESE DAYS OF
In the day when Kaiser 11111 with
his band of Hernstorffs and lleilwigs
plotting as to how they might get
a few greasers and maybeso Jap
boys after King Woodrow, and by
fair or four means get the O. X. G.
and Captain Vance stirred upto the
point of taking a shot at something,
there arose a grout howl in the great i
Uogue river valley because of the j
price of horse feed and men to plow i
and harrow, then one mighty man
called VAN whose sir name was
WANNING called to noisy Shorty to
say that there had come via. the
great streaks of steel an object sim
ilar to a large grass hopper and was
being held .at the depot. So away
goes Ilig Johnson with a gallon of dis
tilate and a bucket of cold water.
Gives the thing a drink;- got him out
in the street and lo! It came dancing
and prancing up the street, turned
around a few times und there came
after him a mighty urmy to see what
it was. And about that time along
came a nice fat horse and after look
ing It over said "What can you do 1
wonder?" So the little track pull
tractor said 1 can do with one gallon
of distilate as much plowing as ti
of your kind. Feed me distllute and
water once a day, and furnish mo a
man to guide me and I will work
for hi in 10 long hours and the poor
old horse said, "If you can do that you
have surely got iny goat for Sum
ner Hill, Vilas. Stone. Parsons, and
a thousand others will not want to
keep piling $18.00 hay into me and
my kind, but I do not believe you
can do all you say." "Well," said Mr.
Track-bull, "Sir horse Just as soon as
the sun dries up the mud, Dig John
son will havo me out In Dillon's
hills orchard with a couple of gangs
beneath me and we will show to the
Doubting Thomas hoys of this valley
just what we can do, so keep your
eyes and ears open and The Mall
Tribune and the Sun will give the
date I am to do my little stunt. Just
toll the boys over the valley to go
over on the west side and ask Noisy
Shortie. He is always willing and
ready to show mo up. I am in Med
ford for the next ten days and then
I am supposed to go north, so be
good for the present nnd watch for
my coming-out day."
