daulinople telegram says there is
no truth in the report that the Anieri-'
can gunboat Scorpion, stationed at
Constantinople, has been seized or
sunk.
For several days reports that Ihe
Scorpion hud been sunk have been in
circnlntion. Apparently Ihey origi
nated in Koine, where they were ac
cepted us authentic by the press, it
was said at Washington yesterday
that the report was discredited there.
DAVE.VFORT, la.. Feb. 20 J. J.
Richardson, publisher of tho Daven
port Democrat, died last evening at
St. Luke's hospital following an op
eration. Ho was 78 years old and
had been connected witli the Demo
crat for more than 58 years.
As far as known this record Is not
equalled by any man collected with
a newspaper and gained Mr. Richard
son the title of "Dean of American
