NEED OF VALLEY
To tho Editor:
What In tlio mil! lor Willi tlio fruit
business? We have boon asked tills
Question ninny Union in the lust few
yearn, and wo wish to Buy hero Hint
thoro is notlilmc t lie manor with the
business except the way It is belli!;
handled.
.Vo business ran bo carried on suc
cessfully the way tlin fruit business
is liandlod. The- only way t lie fruit
business can lie untile to pay the
grower, Ik to j:i-t on it cash sale liasl.-t,
the same us the wheat farmer, tli"
i-nttlo ral.-er, the wool grower, or the
growers of most other products tin
business.
Why should the fruit grower he nt
the nierey of the romiiiisitioii firms,
there is no rea::on in the world except
tltitt be seems to fall for their smooth
talli and iiromlses of bin prices, which
seldom, If over, are realized.
' Kvory few days we see, in the pa
pers, that soiee ulir coinnilaulon firm
has located a branch bouso In the
valley, uutl what Brent benefit the
growers are roIiik to receive, by their
locating here. They canvass tlio coun
try nml deceive the growers by prom
ises of fabulous prices which they
aro unablo to get through their con
nection in the different markets, and
nfter they hiivo Induced tho growers
to glvo them their fruit one year on
consignment or by giving a small ud
vaneo or guarantee, they find a lot
of dissatisfaction among the grow
ers. They will change tho inline of
the concern, or change managers, and
come out tho next year with a lot or
new- promises w hich usually turn out
0 tho detriment of the grower. They
are able ninny times to keep the
growers rroui selling their frull nt
good prices by telling them they will
get more If they w ill consign.
What tho fruit growers want In
tlio Itogue river valley is the cash
buyer who conies to buy what fruit
his house can use ami pays cash lor
it W hen loaded.
Tlio way to get these buyers Is to
sell your fruit at tho market price
and ho willing thai the haver make
a legltiuialo profit.
Wo hopo that the growers will
soon come to sou 1 1 mi I It is to their
Interests to do a strictly cash busi
ness, oven though the price some
years seems low and the market. In

TAXING
rT,lIK Iciii.-il.it ii re has passed tho Iiean hill, orderim?
A counties to restore to taxation the lands in the O.
fc C land grant, decided forfeited to the I'nited States by
the federal supreme court.
if the legislature ,-aii make I'm lo Sam pay taxes, it
is doing more than any other state has ever done. .More
over, tin; Oregon enabling act contains the following
clause:
"The said state of Oregon shall never tax land, the
property of tlio United States, in said state."
There is no tpiest'ion hut that the delay occasioned by
litigation over the land grant is costly to the' state and
detrimental to the counties. An appropriat ion was made
I iy the act ol .litiio !), I!)l(, by
inese hack' taxes ley the government, and f l,h(K),(K)lJ set
aside for it hut the money has not been paid. The taxes
were ordered paid because they were a lien upon the land
while held in private ownership. Payment of tho taxes
will relieve the land.
The lands are not now on the tax rolls and the taxable
resources of the state have suffered it depreciation of
.tJ,r()0,(M!() and an annual loss of taxes amounting to
$150,000 a severe loss to the counties affected, among
them -Jackson, with as yet no compensating gain through
sett lenient or sale.
Tlie legislature claims that, the federal government, has
no right to arbitrarily override the state's power of tax
ation after it was once granted, while the government holds
that no slate can tax federal property.
The state will have to establish its claim in the courts
and if it succeeds, the action of the legislature will he
fully justified.
Statements are printed today declaring that the evan
gelical churches do not use fermented wine, but im fer
mented. The Mail Tribune did not say they did, but niorelv

by these churches, contained an exception permitting anv
pastor or priest to import liquor for sacramental, purposes,
and that such an exception was inconsistent and hvno-
