Koseburg were ordered forfeited to
the government in n decision hnndrd
down today by the 1'nited Stntes cir
cuit court of appeals here, sustaining
the decision ol t lit' Oregon court, mid
throwing the land own to settlers.
The land was grunted to the (,'oos
liny Wagon company by congress in
1S07, with provision that it should
not be sold nt more I lain p.:tt pel
ade nor more than Hid acres to any
individual. Subsequently it fell into
the hands of the Southern Oregon
company, the defendants, against
whom the government brought suit to
recover title, alleging violation of the
provisions of the grant.
It was snid that the Siiutlioni Ore
gon company will take mi appeal to
the I'nited Stales supreme x'ourt.
30 DAY SENTENCE
John Deadmond, picked up by the
police February Jl while drunk, was
given a hearing before Justice (Menu
O. Taylor Monday morning and
pleaded guiltx'to the charge of drunk
enness nnd disorderly conduct, lie
was given a sentence of thirty days
in the county jail. Sentence was sus
pended upon condition that . Dead
mond leave the city and go to work.
Dcndmond's wife, who also figured in
the affair of the 11th, attempted to
commit suicide during the holidays,
but was prevented by quick work oil

VISIT BLUE LEDGE
Developments in the near future in
the deal for mines in the Hlue Ledge
district urn expected following the
arrival in Medford this morning and
departure for the Hlue Ledge of n
party - of three mining promoters.
Accompanied by Dr. .1. F. Roddy,

li. Harnum, the visitors left this
morning- in two cms. They expect to
spend ubout two days in inspecting
the mines. ,
On their arrival in Medford the
mining men were met by John 11. Al
len, who is said to have been working
for several months on a deal for Hie
sale of Blue Ledge properties.
DIED
ENGI.E George Engle, a resident
of Ashland for many years, died at
Ashland Tuesday after a protracted
illness. Mr. Engle was 66 years of
ago, and was a native of Illinois. Ho
has filled the positions of mayor,
postmaster and other offices In the :
city government of Ashland. The fu-1
r.oral services will probably bo held
on Thursday.

The socialists of Talent have ar
ranged a lecture to be held in Talent
citv hall, February 'ill, at 7:.'!0 p. m.
They have obtained us speaker Victor
J. McCone, slate secretary-treasurer
of the Oregon socialist party and ed
itor of the Oregon Herald, the offi
cial socialist paper of Oregon.
Mr. McCone is a newcomer to the
nest from Boston, Mass., nnd has nl
ready made his mark in public, life in
Oregon. He led the recent agitation
in Portland for n reduction in the high
cost, of living, opposing boycotting of
the products of the fanners, mid nd
vocuting instead the .socialization of
all food-producing, distributing and
storage agencies. He led a delegation
of housewives and working people
before the mayor and city council of
Portland, Or., nnd urged upon the city
government the need "f action to re
duce the high cost of food nnd other
necessities. As a result of the ngita
tion led by Mr. Met 'one, n noticeable
reduction in the prices of certnin sta
ple foodstuffs was noted in the Port
land markets.

devoted himself to the lecture plat

I'pon pleading guilty to the charge
of unlawfully bringing liquor into the
state, C. A. (Tex) Perry was sen
tenced to serve six months in the
county jail by Justice (ilitin O. Tay
lor, before whom the case was tried

Perry wns arrested Inst week when
he alighted from an A-hhind jitney,
having a paper carton containing
eight pints of whisky in his posses
sion. The liquor was dumped following
the lienring of the case. Prosecuting
