for a separate appropriation for tlie l,jj; Ih'itte creek trout
hatchery, established last year by the state. Conditions
here are ideal for hatchery work, and under its efficient
management made a fine record its first season, and sports
men should spare enough time from their efforts to ham
mer and hamper established industry to advocate a little
eonsiriiciive legislation.
It is true that a limited sum for the hatcherv is in
cluded in the state fish and game commission's 'bill, but
this measure is t he subject of vicious attack bv our legislat
ors who ooze oratory upon economy upon e'verv occasion
and waste iOO a day of the taxpayers' money upon need
less stenographers. The fate of the llutte creek hatcherv
should be the object of a special measure that will insure
its enlargement and operation.
Conservation of fish, like conservation of humanity
should begin with infancy. Take care of the frv of today
and the fish of tomorrow will take care of themselves. It
is folly to spend all the energv in trying to protect' the
matured tish unless the infant is protected. This can be
done only by halchery work and ditch screening.
