MUNITION
SKCI.'HTARV OF T.IIK NAVY DAXIKLK lias been the
target of almsc from t lie reactionary and plutocratic
press since lie first: look office, and the reason is now ap
parent, lie has conducted the department in the puhlii'
interest as against the predatory special interests. He has
constructed oovcrnnient plants to prevent prevalent extor
tion and forced munition makers to live up to speeifiea
tions. An example of the patriotism of the munition makers
has just lieen given the country in the contract for projec
tiles let an English company. In 11)14, when the depart
ment decided to receive bids from English firms, Ameri
can manufacturers at once reduced their price from ff'.lOO
to $'M) each on 1 1-inch shells and on other sizes in propor
tion, securing the contracts and enabling the navy to save
1,077,1210 on (lie one order.
Commenting upon the altitude of the American muni
tion makers, Secretary Daniels says:
"Nothing but the alter failure of the most patient negotiations and
appeals to the patriotism of the little group of ptecl manufacturers which
have a practical monopoly of this business have made it imperative for tiie
I'ovei iiiutnt to build a projectile factory an t feivc i contract to a foreign
bidder.
"That large manufacturers of war
ing the last penny of profit from our urgent necessity gives a certain
color to the arg uucul'i ot those wha believe that 'preparedness' Is a
synonym for protils and not patriotism.
'J'lie sccielai-v calls attention to the "utter failure of
the companies, with no spur of competition to drive them
on," to keep pace with the improvements in the (uality of
armor-piercing shells being manufactured abroad. The
munition trust seemed to think it the department's duty
to -permit them to make inferior products and accept with
out question anything submitted.
Out of thirty-four 1 I -inch shells submitted by the Beth
lehem Steel company for t he test, three passed a percent
age of 8.8. The Crucible Steel company managed to get
.'57.7 per cent of the sample shells .submitted passed, and the
Mid vale passed 7:i per cent, while the lladfields, the Eng
lish company, ran 100 per cent.
The government plant will compel American makers to
improve their output and reduce their prices. Tt will pre
vent extortion and make for true preparedness. Govern
ment competition will drive no one out of business, but it
will insure what is needed

ELECT OFFICERS
The annnal meeting of the Southern
Oregon l'oulty association, held at
the public market Saturday after
noon, was the largest and most en

ever held in Jackson county. An in

to pav taxes, many stating that their
improved method of handling their
flocks has given them a satisfactory
prolit. It was conceded that Jackson
county can easily he made the banner
poultry region of the state and Unit
Ihe production of poultry should he
made one of the big induslrics id' this
entire section.

BETTER THAN CALOMEL
Thousands Have Discovered Dr.
Edwards' Olive Tablets are
a Harmless Substitute
Dr. Edwards' Olive Tablets the sub
stitute for calomel are a mild but sure
laxative, and their effect on the liver is
almost instantaneous. They are the re
sult of Dr. Edwards' determination not
to treat liver and bowel complaints with
calomel. His efforts to banish it brought
out these little olive-colored tablets.
These pleasant little tablets do the
good that calomel does, but have no bad
after effects. They don't injure the
teeth like strong liquids or calomel.
They take hold of the trouble and
quickly correct it. Why cure the liver
at the expense of the teeth? Calomel
sometimes plays havoc with the gums.
So do strong liquids. It is best not to
take calomel, but to let Dr. Edwards'
Olive Tablets take its place.
Most headaches, "dullness" and that
lazy feeling come from constipation and
a disordered liver. Take Dr. Edwards'
Olive Tablets when you feci "loggy" and
"heavy." Note how they "clear" clouded
brain and how they "perk up" the spir
its. 10c and 25c a box. All druggists.
