Official announcement was made to
day that tho federal council had de
cided as u. measuro of precaution to
mobilize on January 24 the second
division and the contingents of the
fourth and fifth divisions which have
not yet been mobilized.
"The federal council declares that
circumstances enabled it to reduce
very considerably during recent
months tho forces on tho frontier.
At the beginning of the year It was
considered necessary to take more
extensive measures of precaution and
for this reason it ordered the mobili
zation on January 24 of the second
division and the contingents of the
fourth and fifth , divisions which
have not yet been mobilized.
"The federal council remains fully
confident of the intentions of the
European belligerents toward the
neutrality of Switzerland."
There have been frequent reports
recently of uneasiness In Switzerland
regarding possible violation of the
country's neutrality. Italy, accord
ing to unofficial dispatches, has been
strengthening her defenses along the
Swiss border.
President Schulthcss of Switzer
land said recently that the Swiss peo
ple would never allow tt foreign nrmy
to invade their soil. On account' of
the reiteration of these reports, the
French and German governments re
newd thlr assurances to Switzerland
that thy would respect her neutral
ity.

John Pitman and family have gone
to Glendale to live.
The first basket ball game of the
championship series of this valley
was played at Gold Hill last Friday
evening. The resulting score was 38
to 7 in favor of the Rogue River boys'
team, and 17 to 10 in favor of the
Cold Hill girl's team. The next
game is to be played at Rogue River
Saturday, January 20.
