TX a communication to the Portland Orc;oniaii in behalf
A of the resolution adopted by the Ashland "Fish Pro
tective" assoeiatioii demanding the right to gaff and spear

Th man wlio lolls all day in tlio fit-hls ami winht'H to stup down to
the river ami spear a salmon lor break taut , uliouhl liuvo hirf rights.
This interest in hehalf of t he rights of the horny
handed son of toil of Ashland is very commendable. After
his hard day's lahor he will only have to walk some twenty
odd miles to reach the river and demonstrate his skill with
the gaff.
lint how about the poor seamstress and working wom
an? Should not provision he made also for her sport,'? She
cannot he expected to wit Id the gaff and spear. Isn't she
entitled to get her fish also?
"Why not permit a "limited use" of dynamite to enable
those not skillful enough with ihe galf anil spear to got
their fish ! Are their rights not c(iial to the rights of those
who cannot yet fish with hook and line?
Nature should have made tin; Uoguo river a car) in
stead of a trout stream, in order to accommodate the Ash

CHARGES UNSUBSTANTIATED
' I " II K character of the ev idence upon which K'epresenta
A live Wood based his charges for an investigation
of the Wall street "leak" in connection with the presi
dent's note was only hearsay and an anonymous letter
whose author cannot be found. It reminds one of the kind
of evidence that circulates on .Modford st reet. corners about
public officials.
All of the officials and stock brokers mentioned have
been summoned, and no evidence that would be admitted
into court has been adduced. Xo proof has been forthcom
ing of the serious charges made. Kven tlio snectacular
stock gambler, l.awsoiir admitted on the stand that his
object in making unsubstantiated charges was to secure an
official investigation of the stock exchange to satisfy per
sonal grudges. He has " four-fluslied" the public so many
times that 1 he chances are t hat his inuendoes would ream in
unsubstantiated even if he secured his desire.
The facts of the case are that then Mas a bear raid on
the stock market, which began the dav the president gave
his message to the newspapers. ( 'outl'vioiis were ripe for
it. speculation had loreetl the market up and the crash
really began when (formally made her peace offer. Put
there is no proof that any one had advance information or
that, any of the depart nient officials "leaked."
It, seems that the entire affair is a political effort to be
smirch tho administration though nolhing has boon of
fered to connect the government with a stock-jobbing exploit.

X'olonel . A. fllassford, com
mander of the station, after waiting
several hours this morning for tho
delivery of iht supposed message,
started, an investigation, with the re
sult that he learned that at an early
hour this iteming someone saying it
was the Western 1'nion office, tele
phoned that a message had been
received from the all men and that
they were at Cresco Guantano. At
the office of the telegraph company
it was denied that any message re
garding the missing airmen had been
received. This leaves the fate of
Lishop and Robertson again In doubt,
as the last word received of them
was when they passed over .Tacumba
yesterday morning. Shortly after
passing Jacumba a rancher reported
seeing tho plane descend rapidly as
if some mishap had occurred. Al
though this rancher instituted a
soiireh, no trace of the machine could
be found. Arrangements are being
made at the North Island station for
the sending out of a relief party.
