the Hanson plan, providing- a systematic schedule for fin
ancing' the city, and elected a city administration pledged
to carry it out.
Tin' majority was so overwhelming that there can be no
doubt about the will awl intent of the people. Med ford is
nearer united than for many years, which augers well for
the city. Only a united community can progress and
prosper.
.Mr. jMeuyiiski and ins loiiowmg maue a valiant iignt
for a lost cause. November 9, 191"), the Medynski plan
was defeated in all three wards by a majority of 112, re
ceiving (MS to 7(i0 against; it. In' Tuesday's election the
vote for the plan decreased to ;"."), and the majority against
increased to 'AW. The result indicates plainly the senti
ments of the people, as does the majority of (513 for the
Hanson plan.
1 1 is the part of good citizenship and civic patriotism to
accept cheerfully the verdict ot the majority. Next to a
winner, the world loves it good loser, and it is to be hoped,
for the good of .Medford, that Mr. Medynski and his sup
porters of the Medynski plan prove good losers.
It is unfortunate that ill-advised supporters insisted
upon Mr. Xordwick's candidacy against his desires, thus
unnecessarily complicating the situation, through misun
derstandings, and forcing undeserved humiliation upon
a most wort It v citizen. Attempted injection of the relig
ious issue bv fanatics met a deserved rebuke as it alwavs
should.
Now that the election is over, let us forget the petty
strife and animosities engendered and unitedly work for
a greater and a better Medford, 'for united, we prosper,
divided we make for adversity.

The Western Sugar Ivcfining company, controlled by
the Spreckels', has planned a 10,000-acre sugar beet ranch
and a $2,()(H),()(X) lactory at Manteca, San Joaquin county
Some of t hese millions could and would be diverted into
the Medford district of the
irrigation. .Not. only do we. lose sugar lactones, but can
neries and creameries. Opportunity will continue to pass
by and the valley lost! every year more than the total cost
oput ting water on the land, until the land-owners awaken
to its necessity.
Having defeated the district plan, it is time for the
large land-ownei's, who claim to favor irrigation, to eome
forward with a practical proposition for securing it.
When they have studied the question in all its phases,
they will probably realize that the dist rict plan is not only
the cheapest and most equitable for all concerned, but of
fers the land-owner the only security of permanency.
Meanwhile, the valley marks time, awaiting action.

passage of u preferential presidential

about absolute prohibition in tlio state

the consideration of the Washington

lowed to express their preference for

fully recommend the passage of a

so Hint such expression may be given

Tile governor declared the recent
elections indicated llial the spirit of
partisanship in connection with tlio
selection of public officials was rap
idly disappearing, and in recommend
ing tile passage of a non-partisan
election bill covering all state, coun

He lilted the passage of an tidtli
tioiuil prohibition measure, which
would stop tho importation of I'uiuor
for personal use now pennitted un
der restrictions.
"The tendency,-' lie said, "is clear
ly toward nation-wide prohibition:
the state of Washington has indicated
its views by the advanced steps al
ready taken. The benefit to the pcu
ple is so apparent that 1 believe you
will be nctinK wisely if you enact
into low at this time a measure that
will brin;; about absolute prohibition
