sessions of their eoiiventiou today nt
Ohio Stnte university, where prob
lems likely to arise in this country
iollowine the wnr in Europe nnd la
bor problems were being discussed by
men of national reputation.
"We shall hne capital utter the
war, but shall not have labor enough
to employ it," Oeori:e E. Hubert of
the National (,'ity Hank of New York
said in speaking before the Economic
association regarding the situation of
the Vnited Stutes nt the close, of the
Kuropcnn wnr, with special reference
to the gold supply.
"The labor of Europe and the cap
ital of Amcri-.'a will have to be
brought together. Conditions seem
to favor the transfer of capital in the
form of gold to Europe, rather than
I he removal of the population from
Europe to America. "
Mr. Roberts criticised the new fed
eral reserve act, saying:
"In their nnxicly to decentralize
the banking business, the authors of
this act neglected to centralize the
gold reserves, which is the most im
portant requisite of a reserve system.
The result is that while the country":
stock of Lobl has increased from
January .1 to November 1 by approx
imately 100.000,0(10. the federal re
serve bunk of New York, on which the
demand lor gold export must inevit-
ablv fall, has gained less than

banks together have gained less than

Uscrvcs of the lulled States and other
countries and the increased use of

TAtUS, Dec. -'SI. A resolution has
been adopted by the socialist con
gress calling upon the government to
pursue a more vigorous policy both
in military and In economic action,
so that the full resources of the coun
try may be brought into play and
tho wnr terminated more speedily.
The resolution is predicted on the
assertion that the replies of the cen
tral powers to President Wilson's
note leave no doubt that the offer of
peace negotiations was a snare.
Deputies who met German and
other foreign socialist delegates at
the conference in Switzerland sup
ported a motion In favor of resump
tion of international relations among
socialists. This proposal was de
feated by a small majority after a
long and heated discussion.

ALL ILLEGITIMACY
CHICAGO, Dec. 29. Passage of
laws which would elemiuate all il
legitimacy were urged before the Illi
nois womau's congress, in session
here today. Remedial measures sug
gested by speakers were the "auto
matic marriage hill," which provides
that the birth of a child shall auto
matically marry the parents, and the
passacc of a law which would give
a child born out of wedlock Its
father's name and provision for its
support, but which would not enforce
marriage bctwetnlhe parents. '
LONDON, Dee. 29. The Scandi
navian governments have sent a joint
note to belligerents supporting tho
peace note of President Wilson.
A lieuter dispatch from Copenha
gen says the Danish, Swedish nnd
Norwegian governments have in
structed their legations to address to
the governments of the belligerent
countries notes in which the Scan
dinavian governments, adhering to
the note of President Wilson concern
ing measures to be adopted for facil
itating a durable peace, declare thev
would consider themselves as failing
in their duty toward their respective
peoples nnd toward humanity as n
whole, if they did not express their
most profound sympathy with every
effort which may contribute toward
putting an end to the sufferings nnd
losses, moral and material, which are
ever growing in consequence of the
wnr.
The three governments in conclus
ion cherish the hope that the initiat
ive taken by President Wilson will
lead to n result worthy of the gener
ous spirit which prompted this notion.

Tho First National Rank has Just
installed a machine that will actually
keep books, the Tlurroughs Adding
Subtracting Machine, and It will bo
used for making entries to tho bank's
ledgers and writing up depositors'
statements.
To understand best what this ma
chine means to a busy bank, one must
see it in actual operation. A great
number of checks naturally come
into the bank daily and each must
pass through the regular channels.
A record must be mado of each one
and tho account of each depositor
must be handled separatoyl and ac
curately. ,
Before the advent of the machine,
the detail work of entering amounts
in the ledger and making out de
positors'' statements was a tiresome
and uncertain task. All checks had
to be listed separately and added up
by hand. All deposits had to be list
ed and added and their total com
bined with the customer's old bal
ance. When that was dono the total
of all checks had to be deducted from
the sum of old balance and deposits
to determine the new balance.
With the new Burroughs, this work
is all done mechanically, except the
actual settink down of the figures on
the key-board. And the balancing of
an account, from old balance or
through checks and deposits to new
balance Is virtually handled in one
operation.
Tho operator first feeds the cus
tomer's old balance Into the machine.
Then ho sets down the amount of
each check; enters the amount of the
deposit: and, after taking a spacing
6troke, depresses the operating bar
with the total key down and the cor
rect new balance Is automatically
computed and printed In the right
hand column. This machine also
automatically prints the dates oppo
site each list of checks and deposits,
and without any attention from tho
operator, sets each in the column in
which It belongs.
Another thing it does Is to detect
overdrafts instantly, whether the
operator notices them of not. When
the checks exceed the deposits and
the old balance, the machine auto
matically locks and no results can be
obtained until the lever controlling
the internal mechanism Is placed in
the "subtract" position, when the
overdraft is printed in the proper
column with an "OD" sign in red
ink.
In addition to posting the ledgers,
the Burroughs makes out monthly
statements for depositors. Each state
ment shows all the checks fnd de
posits of the customer, together with
the balance he has In the bank at the
end of the month. Under this sys
tem, each customer's account Is kept
balanced all the time and a state
ment is readjr for him at the end of
the month, ftr at any time ho wants
It. on five minutes notice. Moreover,
he does not have to bother with
bringing In his pass book to be bal
anced. This system marks another step
in the First National Bank's effort
to give the most complete nnd satis
factory service to depositors.
There will be a public demonstra
tion of this machine in the First Na
tional Rank, Saturday, December ?.n,
from 10 a. m. to 3 p. m.
