A message from Texas announces
the death of Sirs. Edna Dowers Hol
land, at Slarfa In that state. The
deceased was the daughter of Benton
Bowers of this city and passed away
after a brief Illness. She was a
cent brldo and enjoyed a wide ac
iiuaintance in this locality.
Ashland enjoyed a "white" Christ
mas, with the typical setting of
nearly a foot of snow on the level
in this territory. The gala event of
the day was the entertainment at the
VlnliiB theatre, given by the Kilts in
behalf of the little folks. In the
afternoon those Oom infancy to eight
years of ago were the guests, and in
the evening those whose ages ranged
'from S to 12 wevo recipients of the
hospitality of Ashland Lodge No. 9-14
The invitation to the festivities was
general to the children and each one
received a substantial gift. This

Mrs. Robert Hall of Harvard, 111
was a holiday visitor with relatives
in the Nlms, Saunders and Bagley
families. She is on her way to south
ern California and will visit here
again before returning to the central
west next spring.
The Beaver and Yockey clans to
the number of about a dozen were
the guests on Slonday of Sirs. Eliza
beth J. Calhoun, at a Christmas din
ner and family reunion at Easter
ling's restaurant. The hostess is the
mother of Sirs. A. SI. Beaver and is
a remarkably spry old lady 88 years
young.
Pilot Rock Encampment No. 10,

After routine business matters have
been disposed of there will be an
open meeting to which all Odd Fol
lows aro invited, including Rebekahs.
Another meeting to further the
organization of a rod and' gun club
will be held at (he city hall on Fri
day evening of this week. The time
Is propitious and it is planned to get
the new club lined up to effectively
assist in enforcing the fish and game
laws.
Fred Putnam met with a severe
loss on Christmas day in the death
by accident of his favorite horse
"Chub." Everybody knows "Chub"
and "Hal," Fred's fine team ot sor
rels. . On Christinas morning they
were turned out as usual at the barn
premises on First street for an out
. Ing in the yard. "Chub" iu his play
fulness got hold of an electric light
wire witli fatal results. Tho wire was
- one of the ordinary light classifica
tion, capacity 110 volts, but this was
too much for equine resistance, as it
proved. The animal was an unusu
ally fine one and a general favorite.
The team was well matched and ef
ficient workers.
Beebe & Kinney have gone out of
business, their big storo on the Plaza
having gone out of existence by limit
ation last Saturday evening. The
firm, in its various ramifications, has
been a center line In this vicinity for
over thirty years, and the familiar
headquarters are well knowu
throughout the entire country.
Sirs. Bartow of Seattle was a visit

Mrs. Franc Hriggs died In this
city last Friday at her home, 1S4i

band, who is an employe of the
Flackua grocery, and three chil
dren. Her age was 42 years. Fu
neral services were delayed until
Wednesday, pending arrival of re
lations from tho east, and were
conducted at the family residence
by Rev. 11. A. Carnuhan. Inter
ment was In Mountain View ceme
tery. The deceased was a native
of Iowa.
Harry Bates employed in South
ern Pacific offices at Madera,
Cal., is home for a visit with his
parents, Mr. and .Mrs. C. F. Hates

Silas Jessie Jarvis of San Fran
cisco, trained nurse under Christian
S'.leuce auspices, is visiting her par-
euts here during the holidays.
Don Whitney, S. P. engineer, is
home on a visit, and for the time
being will have a run out of this ter

Sacramento now claims a popula
tion of Oo'.SOT. , making It tho fourth
city In size in tho state, being ex
ceeded only by San Francisco, Los
Angeles and Oakland.
O. J. ltatbbun Is receiving a visit
from his nephew, II. C. Rathbun of
Bellufourche, South Dakota, w hom he
has not seen for the past ten years.
The visitor is a stockman of that Da
kota section, which is located near
the Black Hills. He is accompanied
by his wife and is looking over the
Southern Oregon country with a view
of permanently locating hereabouts
Horace Badger is here for a few
days from Onkland, Cal., which is the
family homo during tho winter, on
a brief trip connected with business
matters.
Dr. T. A. Hall, dental practitioner,
is able to bo around again after pro
traded illness during which time he
has been a patient at the Granite
City hospital.
The cordiality with which the play,
"Facts and Fancy of a Colored Court
ship" was greeted at Talent last week
may bo a means of having the charm
ing comedy repeated hero in the near
future. Rev. SI. C. Reed, writer of
the play, is receiving congratulations
over the merits of tho production and
nearly SO Ashland people were pres
ent at Talent on tho evening of Its
initial presentation.
The new city administration will
be sworn Into offico on the evening

party at her home Monday evening,

present and a very pleasant time was
enjoyed by all.
Sirs. Laura Abbott returned from
a week's visit at her sons near Eagle
Point.
Mrs. Doubleday returned from the
city Tuesday.
Miss Edith Fredenburg came home
from Brownsboro Tuesday to spend
Christmas here.
Mr. and Mrs. E. It. Ilildrith start
ed Tuesday for Oakland whore they
expect to spend the winter visiting a
son there.
W. W. Parkin went up tothe Glvan
