Cover Cifip Grown,
"In the Wenatcheo district," said
Mr. Isaacs, "the common practice
among orcbardlsts is to uso a cover
crop of alfalfa or clover which grows
to tho trunk of tho trees. Three cut
tings which run vory heavy, arc made
thus making the cover crop pay a
good profit to tho orchnrdlst in addi
tion to eliminating the expense of
plowing and cultivating, lixcept
when the cover crop Is turned under
ever three or four years no cultivat
ing or plowing is done.
"The system of irrigation In general
use consists in the construction of a
number of small ditches each ten or
twelve Inches in width. In theso
ditches a stream about an inch deep
is allowed to run day and night from i
tho first of .Inly until tho fruit Is
picked. I'nder this plan the fruit
simply can't help growing.
"A modification of this plan would
undoubtedly be necessary in the parts
of the lioguo river valley having a
heavy soil. The Wenatcheo soli is
much lighter than ours, being of vol

And the way to get extra fancy fruit
is to Irrigate. Matters have come to
tho point In this valley where It Is n
plain case of Irrigate or pull up the
trees."
The first step In the new plan for
the refinancing of tho city wus car
ried out last night when the council
voted a 20,000 issue of refunding
bonds, which will be used for paying
oft the $45,000 worth of bonds due
next March. The bonds will lie dated
March IS, 19)7, and advertising for
bids will ho started in financial
papers today. Tho balance of $15t
000 due and not provided for by tho
$30,000 issue will be taken care of
by a balance of $15,000 on hand for
the purpose.
The petition of the Medynski forces
asking tho city to pay for tho rent of
tho Katutorliim hall on tho night of
December 13, when tho morlts of the
Medynski plan will bo explained by
Its adherents, was read. The city was
asked to poy, upon un understanding
that tho hall had been paid for by the
city upon the occasion of tho meeting
at which Colonel Howard A. Hanson
of Seattlo set forth the merits of tho
plan he had worked out for the city.
The hall, upon that occasion, Mayor
lOuierlck explained, was paid for by
a number of business men interested
in tho plan. Upon hearing tho expla
nation, Karl Kohl statcil that the
Medynski forces will pay for the hall.
Tho request that the charts pre
pared by Colonel Hanson, be loaned
by tho city for the meeting December
13 was acceded to, the mayor explain
ing that ho was glad to have tho
charts before the pooplo for moro
thorough understanding.
The meeting was concluded with
tho reading of the regular monthly
routine reporls.
