the world cycle of "in-fiatlierinj" feasts.
The smi-hakeil ruins of lcsa)iotaniia, where mankind
first learned to think and record thought: the ci'iunblina-
monuments of Eypt, jiaiuted and engraved in the dawn
of civilization; the carven monoliths of the jungles of
Yucatan, records of a vanished race, till mention these
forgotten festivals where man made merry and ave
thanks to his deity I'm' the hoimty of the harvest and
though the merrymakers and their strange gods are lost
in tlie oblivion of lnilleniunis, the custom they inaugu
rated survives in some form wherever man inhabits the
earth.
The Pilgrim Fathers landed at Plymouth Hock, De
cember 21, 11)20. They numbered one having been
horn tit sett and one in Plymouth harbor. Pefore their
first harvest, hardship, exposure and disease had taken
fifty-three. Scurvy wiped out four families. At one
time all bill six were ill. Vet they managed to till twenty
six acres of land, twenty of which were planted with corn
found in a deserted Indian hut. They also built a street
of seven dwellings and four public buildings. They pooled
their supplies and starved together to save seed for plant
ingso all could rejoice when the yield proved bounte
ous. At one time their supplies were so low that the pil
grims subsisted upon clams and mussels, with bread from
ground nuts and acorns.
The first Thanksgiving feast was literally a feast fol
lowing a fast. The guests ninety friendly Indians, cap
tained by Chief Massasoit outnumbered their hosts and
were entertained for three days. Wild turkeys and veni
son, with fitting accompaniments, were joyously dis
patched under, the trees. "When the supply ran short, the
Indians "went out and killed five deer, which they
brought in and bestowed on our governor, and on the cap
tain and others."
The first thanksgiving had no religious feature, except
the customary morning and evening devotions and grace
before meat, it was literally a community affair,' and
marked only a temporary relief from distress. The next
year they had no food to waste at a festival. It was not
until the fall of (2: that a harvest proved ample enough
to justify ii second Thanksgiving day celebration.
Thanksgiving really carries the significance of colon
ial abundance rather than of the rejoicings of the Pilgrims
over the fruits of their labors. It is a fine old American
festival, and as the nation grows more democratic, it will
again become more of a community than family affair.
