LONDONY Nov. 2,Fort Vau.v,
nun of the most important fortifica
tions eiijittireil by the. German crown
prince in his prolonged drive at Ver
dun, hns been evacuated by the flcr
inans. The evacuation is announced
by IJerlin today.
Shortly after Fort Donniimont had
been retaken and a wide stretch of
Ihe front in this region regained by
the French in their sudden offensive
movement on October !2I, it was
pointed ouf that Fort Vnnx likewise
had been put in a perilous position.
The French advanced close to the
edge of the fortification on its imme
diate front in their great drive and
pushed well beyond it on each side.
making its fall, in the opinion of ob
servers at the front, only a question
of n short time.
Ijose Winter's Gainx.
The ficnniins evacuated Fort Vau.v
during the night, snys their official
report, without hindrance by the
French, and nfter portions of the foi l
had been blown up. The French con
tinued to pour a heavy fire from their
big guns on the fortification.
Virtually all the ground of pro
nounced value taken by the Germans
on the easterly bank of the Jleuse in
I heir winter and spring offensive at
Verdun has now, with the fall of Foil
Vaux, been lost to them.
French troops operating in the T.cs
'Ttocufs and llaneonrt sectors on the
Sonime front, also gained ground
ycslcrday in attacks on the Germans.
The 1'aris report of last night an
nouncing these advances is in pari
confirmed by the llerlin official
statement today which concedes
French gains northeast of Morval and
on (ho edge of the St. Picrrc-VaaM
wood, but declares the main effort of
the French to move forward was san
guinary. London last night reported
gains in the Los Docufs sector in op
erations in conjunction with the
French, but announced today thai
heavy rain was falling and that then'
were noteworthy happenings during
the night.
On Rumanian Front.
There is no apparent let-up in the
pressure which General Von I'alken
hnvn is exerting along the Hiimanian
northwestern frontier, but in general
the Itiimanians are reported to be
holding him fairly well in cheek. No
new advances of importance are an
nounced today by the German war
office.
