I in ue alnii the democrat ie ideals of ii s founders or whether
the nation will adopt the policy of imperialism.
Armed intervention in Mexico and the conijuest of
the country for the benefit of foreijrii investors, is part
and parcel of the program of imperialism. Participation
in the Furopcaii war is the policy nf imperialism. .Mili
tarism and jingoism and greedy comnicrii ial exploitation
have for their objective imperialism.
.The clash bet ween government, for propert v against
government for humanity is part of the war between im
perialism and democracy lor imperialism rests on privi
lege and benefits the classes, while with democracy rests
the -welfare of humanity and benefits the masses.
Is llie nation to continue to uphold the torch of lib
erty to the oppressed of the world, or is it, under the pre
tense of patriotism, to practice exploitation of weaker peo
ples? Arc we, as a people, to repudiate the policy of peace,
and willi its abiding prosperity, for the war and slaughter
of Kuropean feudalism?
Since; the civil war the nation has been drifting ir
wards imperialism. The reaction engendered by the war,
bred privilege. President Wilson has reversed this ir.
perialistic tendency and gave the nation a new birth of
democracy. Is this trend towards making the republic a
real democracy to be checked I
Which is the most important the welfare of the peo
ple or the welfare of the exploiters of .Mexico? Which is
the big item, the anudiorat ion of the conditions of the
masses or the betterment of conditions for plutocracy?
Voiu- vote will help decide the future of the nation
whether as a nation the United Stales shall be henceforth
correctly pictured as liberty enlightening (he world or
whether we substitute the pol-bellied figure of privilejred
greed using the torch of oppression to exploit the world.

A REINCARNATION
OI.OXKL UOOSKVKIr has been repeating tlimnali-
out the country during his assault tiiion the adniin
istration's .Mexican policy, the statement that while he
was president; "not one American man, woman or child
was slain by representatives of any foreign nation."
This statement has been proven a "deliberate false
hood," yet the Oolonel goes on repeating it. The New
York livening Post takes from the news reports of the
New York Tribune, a list of murders of Americans under
the Kooscvclt administration, of which the fojlowing in
respect to Mexico are examples:

: J'.ut of course the Colonel's fictions are superior to
facts. Don't the cheering hero-worshippers throughout
llie country offer sufficient proof of the truth of Harnum's
axiom the people like to' be humbugged?
The Colonel also possesses a dual, if no't a quadruple,
personality, as becomes. a strenuous person. In his abus
ive tirades he declares that he was personally conducting
soup houses for the jobless poor in New York City during
the winter that he was faking the discovery of the "Kiver
of Doubt," thousands of niiies away in the wilds of l.ra
zil thus offering conclusive (videuce of his diversified
genius.
As Former Senator l'ettigrew of South Dakota savs:
"AYas l'ythogaros correct. Is his doctrine of reincarna
tion proven beyond a question or a doubt, Have we

lie is finishing his fourth year as
deputy In charge or the sheriff's of
fice and is pre-eminently qualified to
discharge the ruties of that office In
a highly satisfactory manner, and by
reason of his experience and ability
the cost of the office should be re
duced to the lowest figure In the his
tory of .lackson county.
It is univorsaltv conceded that the
sheriff's office Is being conducted In
a highly efficient manner, and the
election of Mr. Wilson means a con
tinuance of its present condition.
An excerpt from the Certified Pub
lie Accountant's report to the County
Court, filed .March fourth. 11)11! con
tains the following:
"All of Ihese collections have been
promptly-deposited in tho treasury.
The sheriir Is observing the law re
quiring iill delinquent taxes to be
brought forward on the current rolls
and entered on the lax receipts. This
is a huge task, and they are doing the
work as diligently as possible during
the stress of a heavy tax Vollection.
II is praiseworthy in the sheriff to
find his office administered with no
bustle or confusion. Only expert men
are employed in the office, in tho tax
collections nnd other departments of
the office. And it Is a pleasure to
find .lackson county coining forward
;is one of Ihe best officered counties
In the stale. Undoubtedly it Is econ
omy to employ only efficient men in
Ihe office of tax collector.
"1 have scanned every tax collec
tion and every fee coining into the
office nnd I find nothing out or place
nor entered wrongly. This is nn un
usually good record.
. Mr. Wilson has by his own energies
made himself a competent deputy
sueri!!. ana ny training ami nanny
has the necessary qualifications for
