present.
The lumber tlejiressioii followed an era of wild specu
lation. Tltt! depression bean in 1907, after the Roosevelt
panii-, and continued under 'President Taft, when lumber
nulls bei'an to close. It existed until 1914, when closet!
hulls reopened anil new mills were established. .Mills are
j'unniiiH; niti'lit and day, where cars can be secured, t'ai
shortage, due to the tremendous revival of business in all
lines, hits temporarily closed some of the mills. Lumber
suffered from speculation, from over-production, from
competition with cement and cardboard.
In the past ten vears there never has been a piece of
lumber from Canada imported into Oregon, according to
Hit; tioveriiment records.
Lumber today is selling' for more in Mritish Columbia
than in Oregon. British Columbia lumbermen are selling
stringers tit $1 to .." a thousand more than Oregon and
Washington lumbermen art! asking. Timbers are selling
at if 1 2 a thousand, as against $9 in Oregon. They are sell
ing flooring at if-' i as against .fi;2.i)(), ami other prices m
proportion.
.Instead of injuring lumbermen, the Wilson administra
tion is activelv eo-operat ing to aid 1hcm in securing new
markets ami working with them to benefit the industry, as
it is with other important industries. Lumbering suffers
from lack of ships, which t he new shipping bill will provide.
if a tariff upon lumber becomes necessary to maintain
the industry, the newly created tariff commission will be
empowered to provide it.
'LITERARY TOP-LINERS
A PROCLAMATION has been issued, signed by thirty
one writers and authors, advocating the election of
Mr. Hughes. The individual reasons given are interesting.
or they furnish conclusive reasons why the ordinary citi
zen should vote for Wilson. .Many, however, give no rea
sons, except prejudice or partisanship.
! he eight-hour trainmen s law is the reason maiiv of
these "literary top-liners" give. The aiiiiointineut of
Louis Hrandeis to the supreme bench is another favorite
reason. Because the president has not gone to war with
(icriuaiiv is a valid reason to some. The income tax furn
ishes grievance to the more successful. "Idealism" is an
innoyance to others. Roosevelt hero-worship attracts oth
ers, back ol a war against Alcxico is urged bv some.
"Class legislation" in favor of the common people is an
ol leuse to others.
Like the "one hundred tier cent candidate" in whose
favor the epistles are issued, none of them give the presi
dent any credit for the progressive legislation enacted, or
lor having kept the nation at peace, but nil lustily swing
tilt; hammer. It, is interesting to note that there are no
war correspondents among the list.
A MANUFACTURED FAKE
THI'i inherent weakness of the Hughes campaign is
shown by the magnification of trifles and the eager
ness with which partial quotations are garbled and misin
terpreted.
The most glaring instance, is the use of the president's
phrase, "There is such a thing as a nation's being too proud
to fight," which bv both Candidate Hughes and Colonel
foosevclt has been used as it campaign text as proof of
the president's cowardice.
the (inotalioii is taken from an address the president
mailt; to iiewlv naturalized citizens, ami the speech indi-
ak's clearly its meaning that a nation should fight only
n a just cause and not to perpetuate enthroned ' wrong;
that the powerful should not oppress the weak, and that
justice, not force, should govern international relations.
liciiig without vision or lihialisni themselves, with
out a real issue, the best that Messrs. Hughes and Roose
velt can offer is manufactured fakes.
