son, speaking to a new citizens' moot
ing here last night, declared that for

the Ideals that bring new citizens to
the I'nited States and outlined his be
lief that in the determination of the
future of the world after the present
war America will play an Important
part.
During a strenuous twelve hours In
Chlcafio, the president addressed
collection of women as "fellow citi
zens," upheld the principle .of the
eight hour day and urged that pro
gressives of all parties work for a
broader America.
In a speech before the Chicago
Press club, the president predicted
the beginning of "a renaissance of the
feense of patriotic responsibility" und
he urged the development of progres
slveness. Speaking before a gather
ing of women later he urged more
'participation of women In the affairs
of tne nation and at u meeting at
night of new citizens, he declared for
united America.

Mrs. Wilson accompanied the presi
dent. Dressed in black and wearing
a largo bociuet of orchids and violets
toho drew almost as much applause as
tho president.
When the president entered the
hall for a Bhort address to the
-Now Citizens Allegiance meeting, the
audience stood and cheered. The
Stock Yards pavilion, where the meet
ing was held, was decorated with
American flags and packed with peo
ple. Judge Clarence M. Goodwin pre
sided. Oovernor Dunne of Illinois
spoke for "America first."
'Let us never allow ourselves to do
things against onr Ideals," ho con
tinned. "Let us never allow ourselves
to want a single foot of foreign terri
tory. Let us stand by tho little na
tions that need to be stood by. Let
us show that we are not interested In
the geography of politics.
"Let us show that wo want no
boundaries to the rights of mankind.
"A free, Relf-Kovcmimr people? does
not need to be watched." The pres
ident's address was enthusiastically
applauded. "Sny it again!" people in
the crowd shouted as often as he
poko of the need of loyally.
"II is necessary that new citizens
who come to this country should not
live by themselves. That is impori

rest so much in its thinking as its
feeling:. Outside the heart there is
no life. You must see to it that you
do not hold aloof.
