DEATH VALLEY DODGE
It has lifi'i) decided definitely that
the "Death Valley Dodge'' motion pic
tures will bo shown In Medrord. Word
wart received by fternard Motor eoiu
pan', D0di;o llrotliers lociU denier,
that tint film hus been allotted to him
for October 25 and IMHh, when It will
be shown tit the Page Theatre.
The coining of this production In
sures for Medford an. opportunity to
see the "mibelloveable" in motoring.
No line could iimiKlne that the lien ill
Vulley Dodge's fents were posslblu un
less they wore enacted before his
eyes. The film provided by Dodgo
Brothers for the benefit of their
dealers, putrons and the public in
general, leaves no opportunity for
imagination. It crosses an expanse
of desert area on which many an ex
plorer .has gone to death. Sands,
rocks and rivers form no harrier,
fountains are made mere mole hills.
Critics have termed It one of the
most remarkable pictures yet pro
duced. The fact that all these ob
stacles were surmounted y nn ordi
nary stock car, selected from tho
salesroom of tho Los Angeles denier,
bespeaks the quality of Dodge Broth
ers car.
"This picture must be exceptionally
vivid and convincing," said Mr. Hcr
naid "or the company would not ex
pend an enormous sum to produce It
liol'ore the entire country nnd oven In
cities of other nations."

COMMUNICATION.
To the Kdilor:
Having watched the papers in tho
county during the whole of this cam
paign and not having seen but a
very few of the candidates names In
print stating what their intentions
are, how am I or any of the other
voters to know who to voto for, unless
1 happen to be personally acquainted
with some of them, if they do not
tare to put themselves ou record
through the public paper.
It hardly seems creditable to think
that they are a bunch of grafters,
but it begins to look as it they were
all 111 tho class with one of them,
who stated in my presence, that if lie
couldn't be elected without pledges,
that "ho didn't care for the office."
"Why? We do not all of us know who !
those men are. some of them have
spoken through the papers, but what
of the rest of them. They are am
bitious to bo the custodians of the
thousands that we. tho tax payers,
entrust to the county officer's aanos,
nnd I think It Is mi morn than right
that they should give us the assur
ance that It Is at leait their Inten
tion to bo honest and to give us their
views ns to their ideas In regard to
tho ways and means proposed in
handling the public funds.
What Is the reason these men do
not come out Into the open anil
iiubllsh facts, signed facts, that ran
go ou record? Is it the fault of thej
county press. ;.r have the candidates
fallen hack onto tho old ''Vniidurhlll
Idea" of "the public be damned."
Respectfully a Voter
II. KKVIXK WHAM TON'.
'. Cold J 1111, October IT.
WHEN Candidate Ilulips was a supreme court justice
.in Washington in the early years of the Wilson
reu-iine, he said in discussing the difficulties of the admin
istration in its foreign relations with Dudley Mallone, the
assistant secretary of state:
"The president Is doing magnificently,"
Now that .Mr. Hughes lias become a 100 per cent candi
date, however, he querelously declares that nothing' the
president has done or attempted to do is right.
When Elihu Root was United States senator, in April,
1914, with tears streaming down his cheeks and a voice
that shook with emotion he pledged his support and loy
alty to the president in everything he might do in this coun
try's complications with Mexico, in the following words:
"Thank Ilcoven wo have a president in whose loflv character, in
whose sincerity of piirnnso to do what la right, wise, patriotic, and what is
best fo.- the country and humanity, we can all trust absolutely. I trust In it.
I have confidence in the character und purpose of the president. He is my
prosiueiii auu i niu suiiiu oeiuuu mm in nis leauersmp. '
Mr. Hoot is now bitterly assailing the president and
damning nun lor carrying out that very policy he then
indorsed anti pledged support to, and urging it as the main
reason lor deleat.
When President Wilson had bv diplomacy skillfully
averted armed intervention in Mexico and participation m
the European conflict, Raymond Robins, the progressive
candidate for United Stales senator in Illinois, said in his
n .. i ; ii
v ttieago ouseimi aticiress:
"The most skillful, the most courageous, the greatest stntesmanshio of
mo wri two years in mis woriu was tne manner in which Wilson averted
war between this country and Mexico. The reason that the blood of Ameri
can men sons of our homes, is not today reddening tho hot sands of Mexico
to servo the interests of n few corporation magnates and speculators is due
mor to the courage and constancy of Woodrow Wilson than to any other
factor in American lite. 1 would count myself poor nnd small indeed if I
were not able to recognize wisdom, courage and public service, even if it had
been shown by the chief -if un opposing party."
Kavmond Robins is todav proving himself "poor and
unall" indeed by stumping the country, attacking the pres
ident for the Very statesmanship he then lauded.
When President Wilson had, by his despised notes.
forced a concession from Germany that, war could not have
obtained, and secured the abandonment of objectionable
features of submarine warfare, and the promise of its con
duct according to principles of international law, William
Allen V lute, the Kansas progressive leader, wrote:
'How well President Wilson seems to have managed It this whole
sordid business of going to war; how. fair he has been; how patient how
dignified, how infinitely gentle and kind! So bluster; no threats; no snicker
of anticipation; no licking of nation's chops Just a slmple-souled, brave,
Boft-hearted, hard-headed man. 11 Is sad enough to go Into wnr of any kind
at any time; but it is less snd lo go knowing that every honorable means has
been taken to keep away from war. And this consolntlon President Wilson
has given us by his wlsu, lorbcarlng, Christian attitude before the provoca
tion of a Toe mad and desperate and foolish. Tho good Clod, who knows and
watches over all nnd sees all n0 directs all, was in our hearts deeper than
wo knew when ns a nntlon we chose this great, serene soul to lend us."
Yet, we art! told today that the nation never faced a
risis, that there never was any danger of war, that a child
ould have solved the country's problems!
A few short months ago and the, peace policies so odious
to Wall street had th e approval of scared statesmen, shifty
politicians, a grateful public and an admiring press. But
a political campaign approached, and as if by magic the
littleness of partisanship asserted itself. A'reinarkable
administrative record had been made. More progressive
and humanitarian legislation had been enacted than for
half a century. The country was prosperous and at peace
with the world. There was no valid reason for a change,
save that the outs wanted in and special privilege an inn
ing. And in the twinkling of an eye the saint became a
sinner of the blackest dye.
Woodrow Wilson's reward for keeping the nation out
of war is to be called from ten thousand rostrums and ki
ten thousand newspapers, a coward, a poltroon, a blun
derer, a falsifier and a IVntius Pilate. J lis patience and
serenity are distorted as pitiable weakness, his strength
and vision as despicable feebleness. And the Liliputians
of politics and parasites of privilege have descended into
the Neweis for slime and filth to besmirch the fair fame
and good name of the president of the United States. And
women are elevating politics to a "higher moral plane" by
whispering libelous, salacious gossii scandal Sallies of
politics!
'
A few short months hence, when the fever of politics

laid away, the president's policies will linvn peir:,ii,,l imi

MOWLB, Ala., Oct. 1 9. Southern
Alabama and Western Florida were
recovering today from the hurricane
which swept out of the gulf across
this coast yesterday, causing two
deaths und property and marine loss.
Although the wind attained a greater
velocity than that which accompanied
the storm of last July, both Mobile
and Pensacola, the chief cities in the
hurricane's path, suffered far less
damage. The total loss in the two
cities probubly will not exceed f 100,
000. The chief damage here was to rail
road sheds and terminals and to tele
phone,' telegraph and light and power
wires. Several persons were blown
through plate glass windows, but
escaped serious injury.
At Pensacola the government aero
planes escaped but several buildings
were damaged. The electric light
plant also was put out of commission.
Train service from Pensacola to Jack
sonville will be suspended for a week.
Two small vessels here sank, while
four others were driven ashore. A
number of small craft were destroyed.
At Pensacola one steamer went down,
another Is missing, with the fate of
the crew undetermined, three fishing
boats wero blown ashore and two big
freighters were damaged. A cook ou
the sunken steamer was drowned.
Although the storm's intensity de
creased as it swept Inland, southern
Alabama suffered considerably, some
houses being unroofed nud pole
blown down nt Opp and Troy, while
minor damage was done In a number
of other towns. Standing timber also
was said to huvo been levelled in
many places, but the citrus fruit crop
in both this state and Florida up
parently did not suffer to any great
extent.
The storm was accompanied by two
distinct earthquuke shocks, which
were felt as far north as Loulsvillo,
Ky., and as far east as Augusta, tia.
The tremors were more decided at
Birmingham than elsewhere, and
there thotisunds of persons rushed
from their homes and offices. No
material damage was done.

Empire Land Plaster Fertilizer
Gypsum or Laud Plaster, as it Is known to the farmer, is a sulphate
of lime, which has been recognized for years as a valuable fertilizer,
and the best stimulant and regulator of the physical conditions of the
soil that nature has provided.
It is composed of 46 per cent, sulphuric acid, 33 per cent, lime and
21 per cent, water. It contains two of the most common plant foods,
lime and sulphur. Dr. Horace E. Stockbridgo of the Florida Agricul
tural College, speaking of Gypsum, says with regard to lime: "Where
the mountain limestone is at the surface, soils of remarkable properties
are the result their grazing qualities being unequaled. The renowned
bluegrass region of Kentucky supplies the best possible evidence In
support of the fact."
Empire is cspeclaly adapted to alfalfa nnd clovers.
We carry vetch, grey oats, alfalfa and all kinds of pasture grasses.
