OTTAWA. Ont.. Oct. 3. A tale of
an unnamed corporal in an eastern
Ontario battalion of tho Canadian
forces in Franco, who, single handed,
captured a party of 22 Germans ad
vancing to an attack and killed or
wounded all of them except one,
whom he took prisoner, is related by
the official Canadian "eye witness"
in c dispatch received today.
"The case of a corporal of an east
ern Ontario battalion is one of the
most extraordinary ever recorded.
The battalion had successfully cap
tured a line of German trenches when
n parly of the enemy, consisting of
two officers and about SO men, began
a counter-attack.
"Tho corporal advanced alone
against the whole party, emptied his
revolver, picked up first one and then
another German rifle, each of which
he mfptled, accounting for the two
offlwrs and 1G of the men. While
lie was shooting, one of the officers
Utacked him with a bayonet and
pierced him in the leg below the knee.
hut the corporal shot him dead. The
rest of the enemy attempted to
escape. The corporal shot four of
them and made the fifth a prisoner.

MYSTERIOUS DEATH
OF THREE SISTERS
LANCASTER, O., Oct. 3. .Tames
A. Tobin, prosecuting attorney, an
nounced today that a rigid Investl
gation of the mysterious deaths of
Misses Agnes and Alire Smetters and
Miss .May Smetters. who were found
dead on three chairs in the parlor of
the old Smetters mansion here last
right, upon the theory that tho
women were the victims of a triple
murder. Twenty-four hours after
the tragedy the police and coroner's
inquiry had failed to disclose any
substantial evidence of how the three
women met their death.
Preliminary search of the mansion
for leaking gas or damps of a fatal
nature has failed to show any perma
nent source of such danger.
Official Investigation Is marking
time pending a report of the state
chemist upon the contents of the
stomachs of the three women and
a piece of pie from which they are
believed to have eaten.
Officers from the prosecutor'B
office and the police have canvassed
the private relations of the three
women and found no possible motive
to sustain the theory of murder. Sui
cide is not considered.

.Fred Dutton has finally succeeded
in getting moved from the Frank
Brown farm, a part of the old James
Matney place, into one of the James
Owens houses in our town, lie had
hardly got moved before he renewed
his subscription with me for the Daily
Mail Tribune.
Our new depot agent, Amos Ayres,
and his wife went to ilodfodr last,
Thursday evening and took in the
show.
Miss Coney, who is teaching school
in the Persist district, came out Tues
day, visited Xledl'ord and Friday re
turned, taking the Eagle Point and
Persist auto stage, under the man
agement of the owner, Henry Trusty,
and returned to her school.
W. M. Benedict of Jacksonville
came out Thursday, took the Eagle
Point-Lake Creek auto stage for Lake
Creek.
Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Peelys and two
sons, Lawrence und Howard, and
Milton York of Ortang, Cal., passed
through here Friday on their way to
Crater Lake. They came from then-
home in the southern part of " the
state of California via the San Juu
quim valley, up the Sacramento val
ley to this valley, having a trail at
tachment to their auto, but found that
when they reached the- hilly part of
the road that they had too much of
a load for their nuto and that the
coupling to the nuto was not strong
enough to hear the strain, so thcy
packed up every superfluous article
except two dogs and shipped them
from here back home, and then went
on (heir way, intending to go on to
Crater lake, thence via Klamath
Falls, back to Ashland, and from
there to Crescent City down the
coast to San Francisco, still follow
ing the coast route south to their
home. Mr. Peeley ' said that they
were looking over the country with a
view of some day coming back and
settling in Oregon.
Thomas Stanley and his father
passed through our town on their way
to the valley Friday.
Mike Sidley of Lake Creek was do
ing business with our business men
Friday evening.
Cms Ditswortli of Prospect brought
out a load of potatoes Friday evening,
spent, the night with ns and went on
to Central Point with them, but
thought that he might go on to afod
ford with them.
E. A. Hildeth of Butte Fulls 'also
spent the night with us at the same
time.
George Ciuarins, who is engineering
Frank Brown's nuto truck, took in
four tons of the product of the Snowy
Butte flour mill Saturday morning,
thus butting the ball in motion to start
a big business in the milling line in
our town again. With the new water
wheel and other machinery, the new
owners seem to think that they will
be able to secure water enough to run
the entire machinery in (he mill the
most of the time, if not all the time,
as they find that with their modern
improvements that they will not re
quire the same amount that was re
quired under the old system.
Among the passengers on the P. &
E. railway Saturday morning on the
eastern trip were: E. A. Hildreth,
who came out on the P. & E. jitney
Friday; M. D. Stoddard, wife and
son; Alex. Hubbard, Jerry Bishop. H.
D. Mills, all of Butte Falls, and Miss
Nydah Neil of Derby.
I al,-o noticed the smiling features
of Richard (Dick) Diamond, who has
been taking a layoff for the past few
months, enjoying a trip back east vis
iting friends and relatives. He has
been in Hie employ of the P. & ',.
Railway company for some year-, and
has been taking a rest front his ardu
ous duties. Dick is a fine fellow und
has many warm friends in these parts.
Lemon Charley of Rrownsboro and
James Kershaw of Welleu, both of
them arc prominent stockmen. Mr.
Charley is interested in cows and
horses and Mr. Kerhuw i- in'erei-ted
in eow-s, sheep and goats. While they
were here fur dinner Saturday Mr.
Charlcv related fine of the must re
markable incident on record. Dunne;
the construction of the Rogue River
canal on L'ttl eButte creek, that sup
plies the valley with water, and Dan
Morris was superintending the work,
Mrs. Morris lost her watch and Mr.
M. offered u reward of $20 for its re
covery, but all in vain. But some
three or four weeks afterward as Mr.
C'harlev's two daughters were riding
through u g.Ue that was used und
had beeu used during nil that time as
a passage for all the horses and wag
ons in use on the canal, nnd there
were at least fiftv horses passed
through that gate twice or three times
a dav. (foinir to and from work, tyul
the mud was six or eight inches dean

tin e-nto and one of (hem was in the
act. of shutting it, on horse back, her
horse, bv n move of the foot, brought
the watch to the surface, and it was

The other day I met Ed Dutton mid
after he had renewed his subscrip
tion to the D. M. T. he remarked that
he had inst sold thirteen head of beef
cattle for over $80(1, and I thouuht
that it was no wonder that Mrs. H.
hns to ruiy so high for beef over $G0
apiece.
C. Hoogerhyde has moved his fam
ily to Giants Pass. Thev will be
missed, as Mr. H. has been the su
perintendent of our Sundav school
and Mrs. II. will be missed from the
social circles.
