MEDFORD MATH TRIBUTE,
When the scaffolding on which
they were at work t St. Mary's
academy slipped at four thirty yester
day afternoon four Medford painters
were precipitated 14 feet to the
ground and were considerably shaken
up, one of their number L. O. Gillan
being taken to the hospital. His in
juries were not serious, but the phy
sician In charge advised a rest of a
few days to give him rest after the
shock. The others working on the
scaffold were W. B. Thompson who
is the contractor in charge, Richard
Sounders and YV. E. Lane. These
men are today rather stiff and bruis
ed from their fall, but otherwise
uninjured.
KING OF ITALY
I'DINE, Italy, Aug. 22. King Vic
tor Emmanuel entered Gorizia Sun'
day under the fire of the Austrian
artillery. Lucinio bridge, which he
crossed to enter the city continues to
be the object of relentless shelling by
the Austrian guns, but unmindful of
the danger the king determined to
make a personal visit to the captured
city.
The king went to the city hall,
where he inquired regarding the
measures which have been taken to
restore the civil life of the city. Girls
working In the vicinity learned of
his presence and Improvised a mani
festation which was interspersed with
shouts of "long live our king, long
live Italy."

Creek, died at the Granite City hos
pital, Ashland, August 21, need ill
years and .'( months. He was taken
to the hospital last Thiirsduv suffering-

leading a horse. In addition to his
parents, he leaves the following
brothers and sisters: William, Theo
dore, Lizzie nnd Christina lloefft.

ARRESTED FOR THEFT
Eugene Small was arrested this
afternoon on the charge of stealing
a camera, valued at $S5 from the
automobile of C. E. Maud of San
Francisco, which was stored in the
Valley Garage, where Small Is em
ployed as night man. The alleged
theft occured Sunday. The case will
be heard before Justice Taylor this
afternoon.
While walking down the street this
noon Mr. Maud recognized the camera
as It was carried down the street by
a young man from Sams Valley, who
was taken into custody. He waB re
leased, however, upon explaining that
he had bought the camera from Small
for $r.
Sir. and Mrs. Maud have been
spending a couple of weeks in Med
ford.

ate it all. They were expectim; to
have bad quite a number from
Brownsboro and Keese creek, but in
thut they were disappointed, on ac
count of,the farmers beiny so busy.
Mrs. Sam Courtney, nee Samantha
Minier, came in Thursday morning
on the P. & K. expecting her father
to meet her here, but instead of sur
prising him by her arrival, she wa
surprised herself to find that be and

to eastern Oregon, so she came to the
Sunnyside and remained until the
next day, wher her husband came and
they both went out to the Mintcr
ranch.
Thursday morning I took pa-sa;-e

turning in time for dinner.
Herman Meyer, Jr., und his father

Mr. Meyer, Sr., the mail carrier, had
his Ford no back ou him that day jit-t
as he reached town, so he had to
phone to his son to come with his
Ford after him, and be had employ
ed Mr. Hurd, our electrician, to re
pair the machine. There was an im
portant shaft broken in the engine,
but Mr. Meyer procured another piece
at the Ford headquarters and bv this;
time (Saturday afternoon) they have
it ready for business. We also had
Frank Smith and ('. M. Jennings and
John Smith, the last two named were
running a truck hauling fruit for
Corbin Kdell to Medlord.
