FAVORABLE FOR
APPLE EXPORTS
H. li. Goodnell of Now York, who
visited .Medford a few monllis ago,
writes 8 follows:
Mr. tienry: Present eonilltioiis ill
Europe, 'particularly in ,' Kimland,
favor box apple exports tills season
from your slate. liuaiiipsH (ienerally
In the allied countries, has been
good and prices higher than at nor
mal times, for every kind of food
and fruit products. Oranges ntid
onions from SikiIu, imported into
KiiKlaud in usual qualities, have sold
at $7.iiu per case for the former,
and $3 for the luttor. Fully 40
per cent hluher than two years hko.
Tasiuauian and Port Said npiles in
very 'inattractive boxes, not packed
or graded like Western apples, have
sold generally at $:1 per box. 1 do
not consider the flavor nor appear
ance of these apples nearly equal
to Oregon's.
Tasmiiniaii Apples
Imports of Tasmanian apples this
season just ended, have aggregated
ri.iu.nin boxes, a third larger than
last year, with prices higher on an
average. Taking those facts and
figures Into consideration, it is fair
to assume American apples will sell
at satisfactory prices, provided the
exports are' not too large and it is
possible to ship, by the tonnage being
free and avuiliihlc. I'p to the
present, no embargo lias been put
on American green rruits. liecently
Kngiand ruled that Spanish oranges
could only be shipped on permits or
licensed sieamers. Cndollbtely Hrlt
isli steamers from Xew York will
first have to carry all merchandise
required by the allied governments.
Any free cargo space can then lie
used for currying apples. How much
there will be available, no one knows.
Trelghts hava been fixed at about
cents per barrel from New York.
This means box apples pay
through freight of $l.n., per box.
Inemiscil Kvpenses.
Owing to very increased port
charges, labor and expenses, the cost
of handling and selling apples this
year In England will be much higher
than last. On the other hand, it la
reasonable ,to believe lUgher prices
will mako up the added difference
In expenses. Had my suggestion of
a chartered steamer been adopted.
roughly speaking, upple shippers
would save in freight costs, about
-10 cents per box. Details of dried
fruit restrictions I enclose. 1 be
lieve If the governor of Oregon wouid
co-operate with the governors of
Washington and California and apply
for permission to load a direct
steamer on the lines previously pro
posed by me, that such an application
would bo considered. If I am re
quested to do this I will give my
reasons for believing this to lie so.
The premier of Australia has
demonstrated that slate aid can and
will do for producers in buying the
1.. steamers for the purpose of
carrying the agriculi ural products of
his country to a profitable market.
Not having done so, meant no steam
ers to carry these products. Tills
means $ I .niiu.doo Australia has
been willing to pay out to meet the
great needs of her producers.
After Hie War Situation.
Are tlie three dried and green
fruit producing slates willing to risk
$IUO.0U(i to do the same lor their
producers? The afler-the-war sllua
Hon, as considered by the present
meetings of the ii II t.,l congress, has
grnve possibilities for American pro
ducers. The details arc too many to dis
cuss by writing. I believe, however.
It Is absolutely essential that there
should bp a congress of fruit pro
ducers called, witii delegates from
every state, to discuss the phase of
the future and its relations to the
future of the Industry and the trans
portation question.
I should lip glad to lie present and
give details and reasons for my be
lief of the necessity or unity or ac
tion as the basis of scir-prcservation.
If this meets the views of such of
the editors as you lunv discuss, my
suggestion with, there should be
publicity ami work leading to bring
about such r. result.

brakes, made a record run down the
hill without any serious damage to
anything, but It was hard on the
nerves, although driver Charley Kell
stayed with the machine, which he
estimated reached a speed of 100
miles per hour. Well, ir you'd been
there maybe you would have thought
so too.
