HEAD FOR PARKS
SAYS OR. COE
Dr. Henry Waldo Coe of Portland
erstwhile Hull .Moose leader of Ore
gon, who, as editor of the Medical
Sentinel attended the Slate Editorial
Convention,' returned from Crater
Lake Monday evening enthusiastic
over the lake aiid'pver the hospitality
shown hy .Medford.
"I think Crater Lake one of the
world's wonder spots," said Dr. Coe
"and I believe It has great possibili
ties. I have discussed the subject
with Stephen T. Mather assistant to
the Secretary of the Interior Lane,
who haa supervision of national parks
and I know that he has great plans
for the park's development.
"Hy the way. It would bo Impos
sible to find anywliere the equal of
Mr. Slather as the head of the na
tional parks. He is ideally qualified,
and takes a deep personal Interest in
the subject. His interest 1r such
that in one case he dug down in his
own pockets for $2G,nti0 to complete
a park improvement, that the delay
of government red tape would have
postponed until the cost doubled. In
one year he gave $iiu,fl00 1 "l0
parks.
"Mr. Mather Is n most liberal big
hearted man. 1 have been associated

and 1 know that be made a home for

organized the Illinois mental hy
giene society and gives $2,000 n year
for its maintenance. Any subject that
ho Is interested in has ready access
to his pocket book."
Dr. Coo recently returned from the
east and reports conditions there
most prosperous. He said:
"They are making so much money
111 the day time that. they can't count
It at night. The east Is a vast hive
of Industry. And this prosperity
makes it hard work for the republi
cans, who have an uphill campaign,
as they have always made the people
believe that tho party in power was
responsible for prosperity."
