many letters of iuuuiry coming to this
office, relative to the Oregon & Cali
fornia Railroad grant lands.
A list of these lands,. by township
md range in the several counties
within the lioseburg hind district, will
lie mailed to anyone requesting such
list, for ii ny particular county, or the
lists '.'or the intiii, ili-iriet will be
ent, if desired.

This office lias no map for distri
billion, but will furnish township
plats showing location of all vacant
laud and unsold railroad land, at $1
per township. In ordering township
plats, both (he range and township
number must be given, and remittance
should be made by certified check or

cheeks may not be received in pay
ment. This office is not at present in a
position to give advice us to the char
acter of the laud in any locality, and
can not ntlcmpt lo advise anyone in
this regard.

these unsold lands in the United
Stales, provided that the lauds shall
first, he classified in the field as (1)
power site lauds; (2) timber lands;
(') agricultural lands. Power site
lands uie withheld from entry sub
ject to present and Inline legislation;
timber lands are such lands having
'lOO.IlOO or more feet of timber lo the
10-acrc siih-division, " agricultural
hinds include all lands not classified
as power sile and timber. Agricultu
ral and limber lands arc subject lo
mineral exploitation and entry under
existing mineral land laws, except
(hat title to the limber thereon may
not he acquired by mineral entry.
The timber on the timber lands will
lie sold for cali, under some plan of
competitive bidding to be later deter
mined by the secretary of the inter
ior. While Hie limber may be placed
on sale in large bodies, yet the plan
id' sale will provide that any legal
subdivision may on application of a
qualified purchaser be offered for
sale separately before being included
in a larger unit. T'or limber thus
purchased, a reasonable time will be
given for its removal, alter which
the laud becomes open to entry under
the homestead laws. Patent will be
issued for the timber alone and such
timber will be subject lo the taxing
power of the .-.late.
The land classified as agriciilt ura

-tend law, with certain mollification
relative to cultivation, and opened
