Ak the hill now standM, Jackmiu county, from iho III,
701 acre of land ifrant, will realize $2,8 1 i ,:3 1 ( for its road
fund, iimload of $rS,7-l8.7.rM. Tho counties' road fund is
cut from $17.(i()0,(MKJ to $1:1.200,000. The state school fund
is cut from $17,00,00() lo $8,800,000. while the land jfi'nt
ediinties w $22,000,000 of their assets spent outside the
state.
AVo road Hint fonin'ossniaii Kinnolt, who represents
eastern Oregon, made a gallant fighl before tho committee
to keep the land jrranl nioiiov in Oregon. We road also
that Congressman MeArthur, who represents Multnomah
county, made a vigorous effort against the changes in the
bill. IJuf we do not road of any protest against the action
of the committee by Congressman llawley. avIio represents
the land grant counties. The loss of many millions to his
district does not concern our wideawake congressman.
AVhon the public lands committee began its hearings,
Iho governor of Oregon was invited by wire to appear
before the committee and present the claims of the state
hut the invitation was ignored. Tho governor, who pre
sided at a land grant conference and vigorously favored
giving part of the proceeds belonging to Oregon to the
Southern Pacific, and who in his Lincoln day speech at
Bedford pleaded the cause of the railroad, did not con
sider the prospective losses of the people of Oregon as
worthy of protest. The Southern facitic s interest in the
grunt was worthy of protective effort by the executive, but
the people of Oregon's cause was not worth championing.
. When the L'tah power trust sought special privileges
from congress to confirm the grab of xwer sites from the
national domain in defiance of the law, the governor of
Oregon directed the attorney general of Oregon to inter
vene in behalf of the power trust with a brief, a matter
that did not in the least concern Oregon, lint when the
slate of Oregon is threatened with the loss of millions from
its school funds and the counties of Oregon with the loss
of millions from their road funds, there is no order from
the governor of Oregon requesting the attorney general of
Oregon io file a brief in behalf of the people of Oregon.
Ariolation of the poaching privileges of the trusts calls for
prompt executive action, but spoliation of the people of
Oregon passes unnoticed.
llawley and Withycombe stand together little sol
diers of big business. We will hear from llawley after
the bill has passed the usual bombastic, brassy claims of
"I done it." lie alwavs wakes up, just before election,
in time lo claim credit for everything congress does. And
the governor will continue to bewail the blight of Oregon
and its industries through ronsorvatiou and welfare and
industrial legislationhut never a move to grasp the mil
lions within reach that enngrcss is filching.
