The Uenrsf pnpei, seeking ifitervojition boeauso rr.

follews:

It is not a punitive expedition that the element seeking
intervention want they desire a war of rompiest and an
nexation for basely sordid and selfish purposes. These
owners of oil and mining enneessioas and hennequiii plan
tations, seek the destruction of tho present Mexioan gov
ernment, which proposes to restore the land and its re
sources to the whole people
The Mexican people may
know enough to care little for loaders, save as a means of
attaining the land. When Villa proved faithless they
promptly deserted him and went to Oarranxa, who is re
storing the land.
This is the seventh revolution of the Mexioan people to
rogain their immemorial birthright, and if such a contury
long struggle for liberty and human rights by a people
handicapped by peonage, shivery, ignorance and supersti
tion, duos not entitle tlieui to tlie Honorable consideration

iMcxioo has bexm the victim of cruel, inhuman exploit
ation since the days of Oortoz, when that "Christian"
blood-spilling brute first began tho spoliation of a kindly,
generous, childish people. In 1810 the peons first revolted,
demanding the land. .1 he .Mexican land-owners called m
the aid of Spain and 100,000 Spanish regulars crushed tho
revolt. In lH'JI they rose again. Though Mexico was then
independent, Spanish soldiers ag'tin aided in crushing the
peons. Jn 18llf a third puon revolution started. The land
owners made a pact with the southern slave-ownors of the
United States, who wanted more slave states. Santa Ana
made a Villa raid and Hie Texas war resulted Texas the
price paid for heading off the local revolt.
Again in lH-IO the peons rose. Again the compact with
southern planters and Mexican land-owners who pre
ferred foreign invasion to yielding their great estates. An
American Villa raid started it. In 185-1 the poons again
revolted, demanding the laud. They were in such power
jthat they succeeded and established the l'irs"t constitution
bused on the rights of man instead of proper! v. The land
owners secured Kuropoau intervention and for four years
the peons fought to eventual victory. In August, 18(57,
iluarox became the first president under the regime of in
dustrial democracy and for some years Mexico enjoyed
prosperity and peace with the beginning of a nation of
groat promise.
Then came Diaz, backed by the land-owners, and by
Americans, who installed himself perpetual president at
tho point of the bayonet. I Mar. ousted three million fa Hil
ars from their homesteads, made slaves of the ousted own
era, parcelled up the land and forests, mines and oil fields
irmuug the local and foreign interests who had placed him
in power. Then came another revolt headed by Madero.
The coueessiouaircrt picked llucrta and then Villa.
Now that the Mexican poena are on the point of attain
ing their goal, is the Tinted States, boasted patron of lib-

WHY HUGHES?
THIS reactionary republican )oliticians of Oregon, as
well as those of other slates, have picked .Justice
Hughe as the ideal compromise candidate for the repub
lican presidential nomination.
Why llughch.' What has he ever. done to qualify? It
is easy to understand why he would be acceptable to the
react ioiiaries, but why should ho he acceptable to the pro
gressives It will lw noticed that all the Hughes talk conies from
standpatters. Is it not boeauso Hughes is a reactionary?
Sure it is that his administration as governor of Now York
accomplished nothing for the progressive cause.
If a suitable compromise candidate is wanted, why not
Ln I'ollolto or Umumiuh, both of whom have an actual rec
ord of real progressive accomplishment, and both of whom
avo "regular" in that they have never bolted the party,
but sought its reform from within.
