William Ira Vawtor was born In
Mnn county, Oregon, March 2 1, 1803.
nnd died at bin homo In Medford,
Jackson county, Oregon, on tho 1th
day of Kebruary, 1310, having spout
hln cntlro II fo In tho state.
Ho graduated from tho University
of Oregon In tho year 1880 and be
gan hln business career an n school
leachor, being compelled to roty en
tirely upon hln own resources.
Shortly nftcr his graduation ho
moved to Medford, then a small rail
road town, which had been In exist
onco but a few yoars. Mr. Vawtor
saw tho possibilities of tho communi
ty nnd In 1888 established tho Jack
son County bank, of which ho beenmo
pfcsldont. ilo remained at tho head
of that bank up to thn time of hln
death nnd made It one of tho strong
est Institutions of southern Orogon.
Whllo associated with ihtn Institution
ho found tlmo for tho study of law
and In 1892 was ndinlttcd by tho hu
promo court to practice In all of tho
courtn of tho state. From that Itmo
on ho wnn ouo of tho nctlvo prrtctl
Honors at this bar and took part In
most of tho Important litigation In
tho county.

In 1905, 1007 and 191ft ho was a
member pf tho Oregon legislature and
wan nblo to nnd did accomplish much
ror tho benefit of this section nnd for
tho state nt lnrge.
Ho was alwnyn Interested in every
thing of a. public until ro and wnn
ono of tho strong factors In tho
growth of this community.
His business judgment wnn good
nnd was gonorally relied upon, both
In prlvnto transactions and In mat
tcra of the larger concerns (o tho
community. His early death Is un
doubtedly due to tho energy nnd un
tiring effortH which ho put forth In
tho handling of tho business which
was entrusted to his care.

practice nnd represented his clients
with zonl and fidelity. Ho wan nl
wayn courteous and when ho could
do so without Injury to hln cause ho
was generous toward opposing couu
sol almost to a fault. Ho would do
whatever ho promised nn opposing
attorney that ho would do.
