A firnl-clitHM hotel in one of the principal nttrnetiona mid
awetM of any place. I'tion the entertainment the stranger
receives depends largely hi iuijireHnioiiH of the city and
country. Recognizing thin fact, good hotels are built in
advance or their couimuniiiea aim mainiaiiieu iy puune
Mpirited eitixeiiM at a Umn until the community grows up to
thoin. This was illustrated in the construetiou of the
Portland hotel, which was erected fo provide the city with
a first -class hostelry, and conduct eft for ten years at a
heavy annual loss, never paying expenses until the year of
the exposition.
Medford, unlike Portland, has no wealthy eili'ens, yet
it has the right public spirit. Recognizing tho need of a
first-class hostelrv, the .Med ford hotel, at tho time the fin
est hotel outside of Portland in the state, was erected by
the enterprise of far-seeing citizens, and through their co
operation and the indomitable pluck and courage of lOtml
Mohr, who has not only risked his personal fortune, but his
time and energv, it has been kept in creditable operation
throughout a period of depression. Not one hotel man in
a thousand would have attempted it, or could have suc
eocded if he had made the effort, for few combine the pub
lie spirit, grit and efficiency essential.
Modfonl s a city of good hotels. Nowhere else in the
country are there as good hotels for the population. Mod-
ford is proud of its hotels, but it bus especial reason to bo
proud of Mie Hotel Bedford, that has given the city a name
far and wide as a tourist resort, and through its sat is fac
tory entertainment has brought much money intti thecoma
try. Many a tourist and traveler, lured by his unusually
comfortable surroundings, has stretched a brief visit into a
lengthy one, to the profit of the entire community.
Prohibition has been a serious blow to hotels. To help
offset the loss occasioned during the period of readjust
ment, it is the part of good citizenship for all to co-operate

wherever and whenever possible. The closing of an insti
Vition like the .Med ford would In; a serious blow to the com
munitya blow many will not realize until too late. Loval
local support will do much lo encourage the management
and avert such a ealaniitv.
