Admiral Fletcher and other naval chief's have testified
at congressional hearings that the Panama canal defense
of shore batteries, submarines and mines would effectu
i.lly defend the canal without warships and prevent the
entrance of any ships. All of our ports could be similarly
defended, as Oermaiiy is defended. "It would be hard for
an enemy to laud except at a harbor.

If we must prepare against mythical enemies, let us go
at it in a sane fashion. Let us take private profit out of
war by government-owned munition plants and shipyards.

United States needs of militarism.

EIGHT BOXES 0F CANDY
A YOUNCI Medford girl received, among her Christmas
1 - jiresents, eight boxes of candy. Inspection showed
that while all were nurchascd in Medford. onlr iwn wnvn
juade in .Aledford, although just as fine candv is made here
as elsewhere. Home of the candy was made at Portland,
some at San Francisco, some at ('hicago and some lioro a
New York label.
Inquiry from the donors established the fact that none
of the purchasers had asked regarding the make of Iho
candy purchased, but had taken whatever the dealer liad
offered. It was within the merchants' power to boost
local or foreign industry and thev chose the foreiirn.
There are several candy makers' in Medford, but they
find difficulty in .sellhig their product lorally. One of
them who for some months conducted nn "exclusively
wholesale business, found it impossible to sell to local deal
ers, but found a market for his output in adjoining Minall
towns and in California. The usual strong-arm inelliods
were employed by outside fir inn and jobbers of undei-sell
ing him in his territory and forcing him out of business.
After he closet! his factory he secured employment,
raveling lor a San J'YanciRco candv house, and states that
he lound no trouble in selling to local dealers who had re
fused to buy local-made candy, at higher rates than he had
asked for the local product, which, he declares as an expert
candy-maker, was superior.
The above instance is only cited us typical. The candv
mduKt ry is not nearly as important as many other indus
tries that eoiiKumc local raw products, that need commun
ity support.
The merchant says that he sells what the public de
mands and that the public demands rorcign-inadc prod
ucts. Thw is only iwrtiiilly true, for niatlv purchasers
never ask n eruiug their pun-hakes. If everv one in
sisted, as every one should, upon lornd product,' the mer
chant would be forced to handle local products or lose bus
iness. Hie merchant can luaterialljr aid in seating the
demand, if he eliooww-- but the supjM.rt must come from
the buying puhHe.
t If we want to Tomer local imliwtricK we must all of us
insist upon buying their producth-clse thev cannot exist.
iNorcan we permit a brief era of price-cutting bv powerful
outside rivals to lure Mwuy (r patronage--'or we will
never have any industries, with their home markets for
produce nuil tier payrolls, but bo forever sendiusf inmd
