NEED OF INDUSTRY
DY W, W. WATSON
Reference to our advertising col
umns will disclose the fact that 13
cents Is being offered for heavy hens
and spring cockerels in this city. This
suggestion ought to afford the aver
age farmer In this valley "food for
reflection." That Is an old phrase,
but It ought to bo takon very ser
iously In this case.
The price for chickens means
money to the farmer who has the
chickens. It suggests consciousness
of neglect to the farmer who has no
chickens.
Suppose tho farmer who succeeded
In raising enough produce for chick
en feed last year had possessed tho
chickens to consunio it nnd wcro now
ablo to offor a carload of poultry to
nn eager market. It would bo worth
to him $2600. How many farmers
raised $2000 worth of anything last
year in this valley without irriga
tion? As a matter of business fact, this
alley should easily supply a car
load of live chickens for shipment to
outside markets every week of the
52 In tho year. Tho nggregate of
that would mean only $20,000 a year,
which would bo a pitifully small out
put of chickens atone for this coun
ty annunlly.
San Francisco receives from five
to ten carloads of poultry each week
from Kansas and Nebraska, states in
which it costs moro money to ralso
poultry than it does in this valley
because the percentage of loss is so
much greater. Why should not Roguo
river valley farmers supply a por
tion of that demand?
Rut here Is a market at home for
chickens nt 13 cents a pound. Man
ager Gardner of the local poultry
company, says ho wants all they can
obtain; in fact, the demand Is unlim
ited; anil yet not enough is raised
to supply tho home demand.
Farmers do not havo to hunt for
a market and suffer risks of ship
ment. The market camo to them and
now begs thorn to supply It.
Rcyond a doubt this is one of tho
big Industries of tho Roguo river val
ley that Is overlooked shamefully.
Thero Is no legltlmnto excuse for
their being a shortago of poultry sup
plies In this valley at this time.

Rheumatism is caused by poisonous
toxin, called uric acid, which is gene

the blood. It is the function of the
kidneys to filter this acid front the
blood and cast it out in the urine. The
pores of the skin arc also a means of
freeing the blood of this impurity. In
damp and chilly, cold weather the skin
pores arc closed, thus forcing the kid
