regions throughout this country. Thu
blossom blight on both pcnrs nnd tip
ples was particularly dostntoHve.

According to official reports from'
many sources, compiled after ox-:
haustivo inquiry and demonstration,'
the blight comes to a general stand
still in the bark, after destroying a
certain part of it. Sometimes tho
germ? die out in the dead bark, n

ends, if the diseased bark heals prop
erly. In many cases, however, the
disenbo, whilo dying in tho older
parts, keeps on spreading; on tho
margin, the germs renewing them
selves by multiplication hnd infect
ing new areas of fresh bark.

of the summer and ntiliimn, thoy al

ter. Huch eases become "holdover"
blight, tho supply of genus being kept
in tho orchard for tho next season's
work. Tho area affected may ho con
siderably extended, but the worst

supply tho gummy exudate and thd

warm weather catibcs root pressure to
fill tho trees with sap, the holdover,
ciwes htnrt off vigorously and exudo
the gummy matter, especially In
foggy or moist weather, literally
teeming with pear blight bacilli. In
sects, mainly flies, carry this to the
opening blossoms.
