NAVY LEAGUE PATRIOTS
Till') Navy league, which
"iireparediiess" lias
hysterical appeals to iatriots and
propaganda for niilitari.sin.
That IJie league's efforts for "patriotic national de
fense" are inspired by sinister motives, ;i desire of. the
mushroom munition plants of Wall street to perpetuate
their profits after the close of the European war through
keeping militarism alive, is more than a suspicion.
J. Pierpont Morgan, who is making billions out of the
war, is the leading member of the Navy league. J lis
brother-in-law, .Herbert L .Satterlee, is its counsel, and
Colonel Robert M. Thompson of the International Nickel
company, its founder, is chairman of the executive com
mittee.
The military program fathered by the administration is
condemned by these patriots as entirely inadequate. They
desire to issue at once federal bonds for half a billion dol
lars io be spent upon arinanumts.
Who would get the proeeeds of the bonds? "Why, the
munition makers, of course.
Among the Navy league patriots are: Elbert Tl. Gary,
head of the steel trust; Edward T. Stotesbury, a partner
of iM organ and a director of the Cambria Steel Co., Phoe
nix Iron Co., Cramp & Sons, and fifty-seven other corpor
ations engaged in munition making; George K. Maker, Jr.,
son of it steel trust director; Robert Hacon, steel trust
director and former Morgan partner; Henry C. Frick, steel
trust director; Allen A. Ryan of the Bethlehem Steel cor
poration; O. L. Mills, J. il. Harding, L, L. Clark, C. N.
IJliss, Jr., and other members of the Morgan group.
The personal fortunes of the thirty-rone directors of the
Navy league aggregate over .$100,000,000, without consid
ering Morgan a wealth, All
to tho I mid to "educate the people" to the necessity of
spending billions for defense and to wine tind dine con
gressmen. Let the government undertake to spend its defense
money through its own arsenals, steel plants, powder fac
tories and ilavy yards, and .see how quickly (lie proposal
will be attacked and how soon the demand for "national
defense" wjll evaporate.
And why shouldn't it? The Rcthleheni Steel corpora
tion has received contracts for armor totalling sM2f:$2l'f2!V7,
the Carnegie Steel, Co. for $:2,)rl,:77, which if manufac
tured jiy.fhc government would cost $2118 a ton instead of
the iji-MO paid the trust. Other munition makers reap sim
ilar profits. And any one who favors the Wall street pro
gram is a patriot, and anyone who opposes it, a traitor,
according to the Navy league.
