THE VALIANT TWO -HUNDREDTHS
Till' IV'dcrnl coiiiiuisKioii on indu.sti'i.'il rfljitions. which

manv months. 1'inniil that two )ci'cciil ol' tho people own
j:ily percent of'llie wealth m Ihe LTniled States of Amer
ica, "the land ol' the free and the home ol' the brave." Thi
concentration or $8-1. 000,000,' )()() ol wealth in the hands of
2.000,000 of people, against but $30,000,000,000 in the
hands of OH,000,000 of people has but one meaning- that
ihe two per cent the L',000,000 control the destinies oi'i
the ninety-eitrht per cent ---1 he 08,000,000. At the beck and
call of the two' per cent, whenever they see fit to act to
reHier, prosperity or panic will come upon the 98,000,000.
rhere are many reasons to believe (hat many of our pan
Jes have been of political making, or a purely selfish finan
cial strategy.
.Just now this two per cent are carrying on a great
propaganda to increase our army and navy. They pretend
to tear some loreign power may threaten, their tftt'1.000,
000,000 and therefore they want the ninety-eight per cent
to prepare (o fight and die to protuct their fortunes, and
also their vested rights to continue to graft the ninety-
eight per cent. They not onlv want that, but want the
ninety-eight per cent to pay the bill. Strangest of all, a
goodly portion of the ninety-eight per cent seem truly
grateful for the possibilities that seem (o be opening to
(hem. .Most of (hem vote with the party of Utah and Ver
mont. One must take off his hat to the two per cent for
their shrewdness in calculation. They are the ones who
will profit by war and rumors of war most of all, and as
to the expense, does any one suppose they will foot sixty
per cent of the cost' hi ease of war, will the two per cent,
who own sixty per cent of the wealth, furnish sixty per
cent or the fighting sailors and soidioi' ? AN e realize this
cannot lie, for between the individuals who are worth
!?'.)2,000, as the two per Cent average, and the creatures
whose average wealth is $575, it is the $575 man who will
go to the trenches and down in the submarine. The $32,000
men must bo preserved for society and to organize busi
ness when the war is ended. The nation needs sueh. The
other class breed fast, and there is always a surplus of
them is unspoken argument of our valiant war-makers.
Bui if there was not a surplus of the $075. (he two per
cent can soon cause that class (o increase. You ask howV
Just as i( has in the past. Perhaps in another generation
(he two per cent may come to own eighty per cent of (he
wealth of our republic. In that event (he. $575 citizen
would have shrunk to $2S7. and (he nation could afford to
have two killed for one under present conditions.
What could be a nobler end for Ihe ninety-eight per
cent than to bravely die on plain and sea, courageously
fighting to Ihe last in defense of the noble (wo per cent
who starve (hem in (ime of peace and feed them to cannon
n time ol war1?
