TIIIO Hearst ifptrs, which liavo hocii conducting a cain
)aign against tho allies' American war loan adver
tise their saffron-hnod virtue in printing the loan an
nouncements as follews:
"Tho ISxnmlner" disapproves of n loan to prolonp; tho war In Huropo
and Ir uiiwDIIiik to accept any money for udvertlnlng such u loan.
"Tho Kxamlner" doen not, however, feel nt liberty to deprive Its rendors
of tho RtntemcntB of tho proponents of tho American war loan, whether In
nowfl text or In ndvortlHliiK. "The examiner," tliorofor'c, prlntn today the
udvertlRemcnt of the loan, but will contribute all the money paid therefor
to the lted CrosR, In tho hope of relieving some of tho Buffering and Injury
which a war loan wilt Inevitably cause.
Hearst is a loud advocate for that brand of neutrality
proscribed for the United States by the kaiser through hia
envovs and in extremely active in carrying out the propa
ganda which the captured archives of the embassy show
is being financed by the (Jerman government. He would
viojate all precedent by stopping tho shipment of muni
tions and supplies from a neutral nation, so that a military
nation, prepared through long and systematic effort for
tho conquest of unprepared nations, could complete its
program of plunder. Ho would have peace with a tri
umphant Germany dictating to a prostrate Europe, and
his religious editors aro busy trying to enlist the churches
in the holy crusade against war.
Ju the portfolio captured from the German embassy,
besides the details of tut) plot to create strikes and indus
trial disturbances in the United States, plans to manufac
ture sentiment to stop the
schemes to subsidize tho press, wore suggestions of creat
ing a press association to supply newspapers with news
colored to suit the situation.
(Jan there bo, any connection between this German sub
sidized press association and the Hearst "International
News Service," which since the war began has extended
its leased wires throughout tho country and is serving
papers at loss than cc-stY Who is paying the losses?
Surely not Hearst, who always venally figures for a profit.
The last issue of Harpers Weekly contains an article
by II. D. AVhooler, entitled, "At the Front With Willie
Hearst," which exposes the methods of this news service,
showing its "80 correspondents of world-wide fame," its
"Herbert Temple," " Frederick Werner," "Hrixton 1).
Allaire," ".John C. Foster," "Franklin P. "Merrick" and
countless other names appearing as "staff correspond
ents" at European capitals and along the war front, do
not exist, and aro mythical creations of Hearst's yellow
imagination. Says Harpers "Weekly:
Tho naiiR'H aro fnkeR and tho fake runs through thu list of others which
I learnt has uhciI to deceive readers and clients Into believing that they were
receiving material from llvo corrcRpondcnta actually on thu ground.
Numerous instances of fake news aro given, all of which
shows thibt the International News Service thoroughly re
flects (he character of Hearst.
