TJ I K f? IS art Uioho wlio coinplnin or so much war news in
tho papers. Such arc trivial minded indeed, for a
world-wide drama, vast, epical, momentous, is being daily
chronicled. In all history there never was such a stupend
ous struggle, nor is there likery ever to be such another.
Beside this narrative, the daily record of crime and scan
dal, society twaddle, sporting events and dull routine of
work-a-day life are insipid indeed.
To understand and appreciate the war news one must
comprehend the characters and motives of the principals.
It is at once a conflict for the peprpetuation of fuedal im
perialism against the rising tide of social democracy, a
struggle of rival capitalisms for commercial supremacy
and a. battle of nations for self-preservation and independ
ence. German capitalistic militarism, with its fuedal and
Alachacvellian doctrines, its eagles of empire, its warrior
nobles, and its helmeted hosts of a nation trained to arms
is grasping for world dominion, seeking the English ocean
on the west, the Baltic to the north, and reaching through
the Balkans and Dardanelles for the markets of Asia.
Russia and its rising capitalism seeks an opening to
the west Uirougli the Dardanelles, Alediterranean and At
lantic, thus opening the markets of the world to its pro
ducts. If the Dardanelles are closed, Russia must buy
from Germany. I f opened, Russia will buy from England.
If Russia is blocked at the Dardanelles, she will push to
the sea through Persia and menace British control in Eiulia.
Belgium is fighting for its liberty. As Napoleon said,
Belgium is a pistol pointed, at England, the head and heart
of the British Empire. Belgium free is a shield against
German threats. Australia, New Zealand, Canada arc
fighting for the preservation of the British empire, their
protection in future against alien conquerors whether
they be German, Russian or .Japanese
Italy is carrying out the war for independence against
Austria begun nearly a century ago, seeking to unite under
one flag, all Italians. Italy seeks mastery of the Adriatic
and like Austria, would keep Serbia bottled up, away from
the sea. Greece clashes with Italy over the rule of the
islands in the Meditcrrenean and Aegean sous and. Asia
Minor as tlieir ancestors clashed, two thousand years ago.
France is struggling to regain its lost provinces, and to
preserve its nationality against the conquering tyrant.
Turkey is battling to retain its palsied grasp on a corner
of Europe.
Not the least interesting phase is the strategy of the
belligerents as it unfolds. Germany has expected a speedy
termination, first a quick successful drive at Franco, then
at Russia, now a quick drive at the west after complete
victory in the east. Allied strategy holds that peace is a
thing far off, to be had when Germany has exhausted it
self, when its millions have been killed off. Provinces
and cities are details. Casualty lists are all important.
Thus Europe defeated Napoleon, thus Europe expects to
defeat Germany.
Tn the conflict, the United States has become a leading
factor, whether for war or pence, for the United Stales is
Uio guardian it the two America's, the richest and fairest
possessions on the globe. Its attitude and actions are of as
far reaching consequence as that of any of the belligerents.
Who cares to listen to the patter of small talk when tho

IT'S hard to show Nature any-
thing about curing tobacco. So
we have adopted Nature's own
way to make VELVET the
smoothest smoking tobacco slow,
patient ageing.
Men may " process, H but they cant
put into tobacco any finer pipe
qualities than those Kentucky's
limestone soil so richly gives to
the Burley de Luxe.
But these qualities can be improved.
They are brought out in their fullness in
the aged-in-the-wood mellowness of cool,
slow-burning VELVET.
For two years the finest Burley leaf remains
in sealea wooden casks, ana then only is
it ready to be made into VELVET.
Get your tin novo jom the growing ranks of the
army who have found VELVET totacco a delight
without a single drawback.
