HONG KONG KOLUM
UNC'LIC SAM is about to 'i M.OOO.OOO feet of timber
off of a forost that doesn't exist. At least, certain
learned senators, led by Kry Pit man of Nevada, said dur
ing tbe last congress that it didn't exist. You remember
that bill introduced by Pittinan during the last congress to
"abolish the riiugaHi national forest in Alaska." Pitt'-,
mail and bis co-workers in tbe senate said there wasn't hi'iv:'
timber in the f'hugach at all; that the creation of the fore&tfl
wis just a trick of Clifford PincJiot's to prevent jho it(t
but worthy settler from getting the lands. .
Now comes the Alaskan engineering commission, which
is building the new government railroad from Seward on
the Pacific '171 miles to Fairbanks in the interior, and asks
and gets permission from tin; forest service to cut 35,000,
000 feet of timber in this saint Chugach forest for use in
constructing the Uew line. The permit was issued by the
district forester at Portland, Ore., who has direct super
vision of the Alaskan forests.
This 8",0()0,000-foot cut will be the largest amount of
timber ever felled on the Alaskan forests in one operation,
and at the average rate per thousand board feet obtained
for timber sold from the Chugach forest during the last
fiscal year, the cut is. worth approximately M. "5,000 on
the stump. It will be nearly twice as much as the total
quantity of national forest timber now cut and used an
nually for local purposes throughout Alaska, but only n
little more than one-tenth of the estimated annual growth
of the Alaskan forests.
The two national forests of Alaska the Tongass and
the Chugach contain about 78,000,000.000 feet of mer
chantable timber and it is estimated bv the forest service
that more than 800,000,000 feet could be cut every year
without lessening the forests' productivity!
How's that, Senator Key Pittman?
