country, one-third are poverty-stricken.
Thirty-seven per cent of wives and mothers of work
ingmen are forced to do hard work themselves to help
keep the wolf from the door.
Five hundred dollars per year is the income of half of
the wage-earning fathers.
Less than $15 per week is the wages of two-thirds of
the adult male workers.
Nearly half the' women workers earn less than $( pur

It is evident (hat before trying to regulate its neigh
bors or interferring in the quarrels of Europe, the United
States should set its own house in order. Instead of big
navies and standing armies, let us have social justice.
To establish it is a task that calls for all the wisdom and
statesmanship of the nation a work in which old world
diplomacy has miserably failed, a problem the new world
must work out for itself, for government should be some
thing more than a robber in time of peace and a murderer
in time of war, something more than an instrument to
exploit the many lor the lew.
