J. Duryca, of tho Ashland Commercial Club, in Poitlaud Jour nal.) Tho touting motoiisl who travels over the Pacifio highway from Ore gon to California will long remember the beauty of tho scenery and tho splendid character of the road bed of t lint part of his journey that lies bplwpen the city of Ashland and the California state line. Tho dip ovoi the Siskiyou mountains is one jif the most wonderful mid beautiful rides in Ameiiea, and the people of Oregon may well consider this stretch of. the Pacifio highway as one of tho big gest sccnio usscts they possess. Tho old journey over tho Siskiyou, on what was known as the Dollarhido toll road, was one of discomfoit as .'10 per cent, that ta.xcd tho best of machines. Seven grade crossings over the trackH of tho Southern Pa cific made it dangerous, especially as tho grades were heay on rail and road. Hood Has no Grade Crossings The new road that lias been laid out in masteily fashion by Frank A. Kittiedge, tho engineer in charge of const rue.) ion, has no grade ciossing, and it maximum grade is hat (I per cent. The Southern PaiMic hacks aio classed but twice in tho journey to tho summit, imd in each case the motorist finds a splendid concrete bridge to carry him over in snfty. The appioaeh to the lirst of these hiidges that is cueouutcied on the journey from Ashland is a splendid well as danger. It was n "lough and piece of cngineeiiag. with a gteat, rugged road," with grades as high a- Ihioad and ias loop thrown out our miles from California Hi slope of SIkl)oii grade. the mountain uroiind which one can ran at good sliced. Can cs arc l.aigo Auto dm era will find this new highway is easy work, for its bioad, sweeping curves and light guides do not impose any tux on his strength or nerves. All curves are built with 150 foot minimum radius. All these curves are slightly banked to the in side for safety and to allow drivers to take grades on speed, ,'i'hc ioui way if. 'J I feet wide jn all plncc, with an in crease in width on cunes wheru necessary for safety. Tho people of Jackson county Iiiivp bonded Ihcmsehes for .i.'iOO.OOO for the purpose of cousti acting a paved highway acios the county to the Cal ifornia line. Traffic to Contlniio The stato of Oregon is to assist in the work of building this highway and will take charge, of tho work from a point a few miles cast of Ashland to the state line. The state will pave V.Va miles of the highway. This will be what is known, as "two course" cement pavement, six inches in depth with a top dressing of rich mixture. In order not to interfere with traf fic over the1 mountains it is phiuiied to lay an eight foot strip lirst thcii, later on, add to this another strip of similar width, to make the .full Ifi foot pavement. Work on this first stiip has .started. Thrfe miles of pavement will be laid this year. Tho distance from Ashland to the summit of tho grade w ifiolliskiyous is 10 miles, and the distance to the California lino is 22 miles. Scenery Is Itnro Clinrm Every foot of the trip from Ash land to tho state line will prove of interest to tho tourist, for each turn in the road brinirs into view a scene t,r mm ..linnn and loveliness. The vim frnm the summit, fiicine south ward, is almost beyond description. Straight in front tlio snow cappeo i.nn.i ..r nr.imil Klmsin L'listcns avaiiist Hid exdtiisitc blue of Hip California ulrV. Overhead, just to the left towers stntely Pilot rock, guardian sentinel of tho paus over tlmSiskivous. Down below', hundreds, of feet, 'may bo seen tho tracks of the Southern Pacific winding their -tortuous way thiough the Shasta ralley. Op nnd on, . beyond Jho valley, stretch tjio rolling hills and peaks of tho Coast range and the Sierra Ne vada mountains, covered with, snow or with verdure clad. No man with in whose breast there is even a spark of love of tho beautiful or a rever ence for tho things that god has made to delight llio children of men can ga?o upon the view from the Kiimmit nf (tie Pacific hiehwnv with out receiving nn impression that will last as long as his memonv. Highway Fine Investment Tlw. twnntn nf Hrrron liuiv Well he proud of their part of tho construc tion of this magnificent highway over the Siskiyou inoiintiiinsproud of tho chnnge from the old conditions that made the journev so irksome. It is n fine investment, one thai will bring big returns in the in creased tourist travel that will be worth millions of dollars m the years to come.
