HONG KONG KOLUM
nplllii Wntor Users League has launched a campaign to
- secure irrigation. It is desired to know how many
farmei-s, orehardists and land owners of the Rogue river
valley want water and how many will cooperate to secure
it. Every landowner should state his nosition for or
against irrigation. f
The effort is jiot made in behalf of any one source of
supply, but the besf available source for the least money
for the acreage signed up, will be utilized. The system
will be constructed only for those who want it.
Nor will any effort be made to induce any landowner
fo sign ,up. ff lie does not want, water, let him say so.
Mill u large percentage do want water and realize that

it is necessary to have water to inalce( their investment
a paying one and the valley a pi'oduclive one and such
are asked to cooperate.
The loss to the valley in crops the past two years
would build several million dollar irrigation systems. The
actual cash loss this year would place water on every acre.
Similar losses may be expected in future years unless
provided against by irrigation.
One orchard is t lias twenty men employed picking his
immature fruit and heavily pruning his orchard in an
effort to save (he trees. lie estimates his loss at 25 cars
of pears. He has averaged better than a $1000 a ear for
nis iruit in previous years. J I is loss thoreloro would pay
the cost of placing water on (he land several times. Other
orehardists have ceased work, letting the fruit drop off
as it dries.
The farmer finds his corn drying up. He finds his
garden witherinir. lie finds it hard to cut half :i eron of
alfalfa the second cutting, flis actual losssin produce in
one year would pav for the water.
It look some such object lesson as this dry yedr'to con
vince some of our landowners of the necessity of placing
the valley under water. Despite the present'hardship, it
will prove a blessing in disguise if it results in the placing
of any considerable acreage under water!
Place the valley under water, and we wont need to
talk about rebuilding to pay our debts. The increased
production will bring prosperity itself. Tt will transform
fanning methods. The small tract will replace the large
one. It will make a beet sugar factory an actuality. It
will attract hoineseekers, stimulate dairying,-hog raising,
i arming aim iruu, raising and create a demand lor land,
and diversified industries will follow.
Irrigation is the keynote to the valley's future. With
it wo progress. Without it, we retrograde. With it. we
can sustain many times our present population. Without
it, we cannot sustain what we already have. The lesson
is so plain that he who runs may read.
It is time to take an inventory, to find out just where
we are, and govern our future accordingly to make an
effort to save ourselves by utilizing the water flowing to
waste on every hand. TIow many want salvation?

TTM3 campaign that is being made in behalf of the
nomination of Senator Weeks as the republican can
didate for president, is indicative of the political spirit of
the American moneyed uristocraev. Thev still believe

pillage.
For sheer impudence the stand-pat attitude is without
parallel in European countries, unless it lie the grand
dukes of Wussia. Give us the government and we will
give you prosperity;, refuse and you will hunger.
Plutocracy demands private ownershin of natural
monopolies, by which to levy tribute upon the nation. If
the nation's .legislators endeavor to lighten the burdens of
(he citizens. theV denounce it as an unwarranted inter
ference with business. They have handed themselves to
gether in numerous organizations throughout the land,
having lor their ostensible purpose the commonweal,
but which are in fact used for bludeoning public officials
into submission.
When laws are passed that are unsuitable to their
methods of pillage, they declare war to the end, but when
tlieir tools are in power, and their programs adopted tlfe

For social justice, plutocracy substitutes charity with
a String to it. It is nisnirod unlv bv tho roncHnnn'm-

ol a past and less nil winced nge. Progress means in thun
world, simply a method of increasing the riches of the
ricii. i lie lanorer to tlieni is simply the mud-sill of so
ciety. They want to raise him in effieienev onlv that he
may he a more el Uncut tool for their purpose, or a better
man killer when they need hnn to make war or defend
their possessions. J '
Senator Weeks is plutocracy's candidate, nnd he am
.Jy meets their requirements, lie is the epitome of the!
economic system 01 uigiand, that has caused her sturdv
