SCOTT NEARING, professor of sociology in the "Whar
ton School of Finance, a branch of the University of
Pennsylvania, has been dropped from the faculty because
his "radical" teachings with reference to industrial rela
tions, -which disturb the uneasy consciences of stand-pal
millionaire trustees.
Professor Nearing taught that in order for a nation to
be permanently prosperous, it is necessary to look after
the welfare of the toilers who create its wealth. JTo holds
that under present conditions, tho laborer is not-getting
enough in wages to provide -for himself and family and
provide for that deterioration that every working man as
well as every working machine must sniffer, lip pointed
out liio mummo irugit; uucc. on uic national mo m weed
ing a deteriorating and inferior liiiinnuity.
Professor Nearing states that if a certain fund must
be earned by a factory to make good the breakdown and
provide for upkeep of buildings and machinery, men
should also bo in some way remunerated for their break
down and assured of their upkeep, lie believes that no
labor system should rob children of childhood and woman
of maternity, and teaches that tho recognition of these
fundamentals is essential in settling the problems of in
dustrial relations.
The views of labor held by the stand-pat capitalist is
that expressed recently by .James J. J I ill, who holds the
Chinese ideal labor because they can live on ten cents a
day, and by "Pro?. John J. Stevenson who holds that "labor
is merely animated machinery" to bo discarded when
worn and that the death of 700,000 children a year from
starvation is "a blessing to themselves and the commun
ity." , .
The University of Pennsylvania is a state institution.
Tf thought is shackled there, it means that the state tol
erates 'its shackling. .11' narrow money-mad commer
cialism is to be permitted to dictate to our universities, it
will stifle their growth and the nations growth. Freedom
in teaching is as necessary in a free institution as other
freedom.
If tho state of Pennsylvania stands for the shackling of
I nought, it stands J or intellectual prostitution. The trus
tees of its university already stand for commercial and
political prostitution and in their public bo-damned policy
they now stand for intellectual prostitution. But do thoy
represent tho people of the state? Have they the right
conception of colleges and instructors.
The univorsity professor is not a mere "hired man" a
piece of machinery, as viewed by the captains of industry,
but men of concionco and brains. The eollore. is luihlin
I property and does not belong to any particular economic
group, but to tho people. The courso followed in the
Nearing caso will drivo all men of ability and independ
ence out of university faculties and leave weaklings to
endorse'the program dictated to them.
It is evident that controlling financo and commerce,
and philanthropy is not enough our millionaires are at
tempting to control education in public institutions.
