THE GERMAN OEISIS
Till fiiiluro ofllie Gorman reply to.cljjjavow the sinking
of the Lnsitanin and the loss of over a hundred
American lives is to be regretted. It makes most diffi
cult the course of President Wilson to firjnh; maintain
American rights and at the same time avoid a clash with
Germany.
The people of Germany arcwar mad. Tjiey have, little
to lose by a declaration of war against the United States.
One more isolated, distant and unprepared enemy would
not make much difference in their situation. They might
figure a gain, inasmuch as munitions supplied allies would
be diverted to prepare the United States.
The crisis that confronts the administration in the more
difficult ill that few Anierii'MiiK nntl no l(!iirnnim mn hi
I a position to give a fair and
or on rile present dispute. All see through glasses colored
by heredity and environment.
The danger of the American position is intensified, by
the fact that we are a nervous and excitable people and a
wave of patriotic hysteria te apt to sweep the nation into
a conflict as it did in '!J8. Our isolation as a nation has
kept us free hitherto from friction like that engendered
by the existing situation.
(lennany has been friendly to the United Slates pi tho
past, but on account of the war munitions being sold the
allies, has conic, recently to hate us. Germans admit that
we have every right to sell these munitions under interna
tional law, and were the Germans in control of the sea,,
would themselves profit by the purchase of war material,
but they naturally deeply resent the traffic and it has em
bittered Germans against America, further complicating
the situation.
The United States, as tho foremost representative of
peace in the world, as the spokesman of the new Avorld
code of the rights of map and democracy, should take ev
ery precaution to avoid a conflict. Swell Iheadedness and
braggadocio are not patriotism. There is as much and
more moral courage in refusing to join a war-crazed world
in the abyss of slaughter and destruction as there is in
rushing precipitately into a conflict. Unite force is never
in the long run superior to moral law. Humility is the
ideal of Christianity.
War is opposed to civilization, to nature, to humanity,
to religion. Any argument in its favor can be used as an
argument for crime. Krom a selfisTi viewpoint, if we can
keep out of war we will become the; commercial center of
the world, supplying devastated IGurope with the where
withal of its restoration after the blond saturnalia has
finished. 4' ,
Patriotism puts the good of the nation first, and the
good of the nation cannot be served by war. On account
of the inflamed and one-sided view obtaining in belligerent
countries, we cannot allow ourselves to be governed by
these lpp-sided standards. Nor should we make demand's
which we know will not be granted, thereliy causing our
selves needless humiliation.
It is fortunate for the nation that we have an executive
as calm, even-balanced and patient as Wood row Wilson,
who thoroughly understands the dangers )mt confront the
nation, and who will, if anyone can, maintain peace with
out sacrificing the nation's honor.
"Honor" is a line word but there is no 'honor among
belligerents, and there is no reason lor caring what the
lunatic nations of hhirope think about the United States,
for none of them care in the least what the United States
thinks of them, except, as it affects their material interests.

Ponder these figures. One hundred million dollars
means the total earnings of over four thousand laborers

One hundred million dollars would mean the savings
of more than twenty thousand men laboring, toiling year

In the families of the poor hundreds of children die
every week bccaiwe of insufficient food or care because of
the poverty of their parents.
The child of .Astor has not contributed more to the

the squalor of the tenement district. Kaeh comes into the

on the forehead of the other is placed the brand of pov
