mf In? valley.
These crops have been neglected because no effort has
previously been made for marketing. This year, however,
the Koirim River KVuil & Produce association has enlarged
its field of operations and is market ing all crops. In addi
tion, there w a coinlnisnion house that cannot secure prod
uce needed. .
Orders for peas and beans', for cherries and berries re
main unfilled for lack of product'. One order for fift
crates a day of blackberriu for three njontlm remain un
filled because, there are not that many blackberries grown
in the valley.
Local canneries fire unable to operate continuously be
cause of lack of urodiict. Al tin mull canneries are willing
to enter into contracts with growers upon an acieag'j
bais, sufficient acreage cannot be secured.
There are thoimands of acres of idle land too shallow '
for orchards, but ideal for berries. All thev rerpiire is til
minimum amount of care and water. ,
The I'Yuit association has marketed seven or eiirlit toini
of cherries at satisfactory prices. W. 10. Phipps, owner of
the (Jold Mottom cherry orchard at (lold Hill, says there
is more money in cherries than in any other fruit, and lias
the figures to prove it. U'ogue K'iver valley cherries stand
shipment better than any grown elsewhere, in proof of
which he shows figures realized on fruit shipped as J'ar
east as New York, where the cherries topped the market.
Ve have three creameries in the valley. None of them
secure enough cream. There is a market for ten times
the output. The opportunity is here. This could become
one of the. great dairying districts of Oregon. The cream
eries at least one ot them is willing to help finance the
dairvman.
To produce, what I lie valley is capable of producing,
either in vegetables, berries, fruit or grain and alfalfa,
irrigation is necessary. The sooner it is realized, the bet
ter. Land with water is worth double the price of the
same laud without, because crops are assured, regardless
of weather. Mut oven those who have irrigation or can
easily obtain it, do not make the most of their opportun
ities, Poultry is another neglected industry. An average
annual profit ofjonc dollar per lieu is guaranteed, yet the
local poultry company cannot begin to fill the orders it
receives.
The creation of prosperity lies with ourselves. Hard
work is its basis. Moasjcd (lermaii "efficicnev" is simplv
another name for intelligent, hard work. Whatever the
German does he does well, and he makes a success of what
ever lit! does because he is not afraid of work.
To become prosperous we must produce more;.. The
time has arrived when if we do not we will slip baeifward.
We have an ideal climate and nature does more than else
where. If we fail, we must not look to the war as an ex-
