its attraction.
Of all the forms of angling, the use of the artificial fly
requires most knowledge and
yields the greatest pleasure. It begins with the use of or
dinary wet or sinking fly, that submerges itself and ends
with the use of the drv fly, imitating the flies of nature,
that merely light gracefully on the water and float gently
with the current, requiring an accuracy and delicacy that
only comes with the skill acquired by long practice.
Between tho boy and the bent pin and tho dry-fly ang
ler, the two extremes, range all degrees of anglers. Some
times the boy develops backwards, uses heavy tackle and
salmon eggs for bait, and boasts of exceeding the legal
limit in slaughter. Sometimes he goes forward as far as
to use a two-handed cane pole and a spoon for trout and
stops there. But if he seeks the most enjoyment he will
progressively develop into the skillful fly fisherman, to
whom the size of the catch is immaterial but the way it
was secured most material.
