No. 27, which passed the senate Februarv 13, 1903, as

tain as Afount MeLoughlin.
On December 26, 1908, the Oregon geographic board
adopted a resolution declaring the name to be Mount Me
Loughlin. On November 11, 1911, the U. S. geographic board
passed a resolution declaring as follews: "MeLoughlin,
peak, Cascade range, southern Oregon, latitude 42 20"
(Not McLaughlin, not Pitt).
How did the mountain come to be called Mt. Pitt? In
the latter '70s Captain Applcgate ran a survey for a rail
road from the Umpqua valley, over the Trail divide, up
Butte creek, skirting the base of Mt. MeLoughlin, over the
Fish Lake pass into the Klamath country, thence via the
Pitt river to California. On the map of the survey, which
he unsuccessfully tried to sell to the Oregon & California
railroad, lie labelled Mt. MeLoughlin as Mt. Pitt to iden
tify his route as the Pitt river route. From his map it was
copied on railroad and other
stuck probably because Pitt
MeLoughlin.
Pioneers never heard of
a few years it will never be heard of again, as both govern
ment and railroad maps in the future will givo the moun
tain its correct name. Residents of the valley should drop
the false name and give the mountain its correct title a
name identified with the early history of the state. Dr.
MeLoughlin well deserves the honor, for a finer man never
lived.
