At tho offices of the line it wns an
nounced nt noon that it was known
that seventy-niuo of tho first cabi.n
passengers had been saved, according
to lists compiled from their own ad
vices and other sources. A revision
of the passenger list placed the total
number of passengers aboard at 12il4.

In the capture of Llbau tho Ger
mans have gained one of the main
'objects of their invasion of tho Ilal
tlc provinces of Russia. This move
ment was designed to occupy Llbau
and Riga, which would enable the
Germans to harass Russian com
munications with Petrograd.
Llbau Is an Important seaport and
Industrial center. It Is about 75
miles along tho sea coast from tho
German border.
