railway, which will be utilixed as jnrt

The harbor, landlocked and com
modious, nffofds ensy dockage for
vessels of any sire nt nny time of tho
year.
John K. Hallnine of Seattle bought
Ihe town-ile of Scwnnl for $1000 in
1U02 from Mrs. Ijowell, n native wo
man, and then the solo inhabitant.
He financed nnd built tho first
twenty miles, of railway northward,
nnd later sold the Alaska Central, as
the road was then called, to Frost &
Osborne.
Tho failure of these men nnd tho
material setback that resulted im
pressed the people of Seward that
they must begin seriouMy developing
the resources of that vicinity. al
ualile quarts properties were soon af
terward in, oiHration.
The road started by Rollalne is
now 72 miles long, completed through
tho coat range at a cost of $-1,000,
000.
It points into a country whose till
able area exceeds thnt of Norway,
frweden nnd Finland combined, with
their 10,riQ0,000 population.

to suxtnin 10,000,000 head of cattle,
nnd, above nil, perhaps a climate
pure, bracing nnd tempornte.
The town lies on a slate gravel
formation like n large fun projeet-
ing into lite bay. inc elevation is
about 110 feet above sen level.
Like practically every other wes
tern town, Sewnrd has experienced a
boom and n reaction. It is now a
substantial, well built little city, busy
and optimistic. It has its enterpris
ing daily paper, its grammnr nnd
high schools, telephono exchange, well
stocked stores, cfHnfortnbo hotels,
electric light plnnt, cable and wire
less stations, n sash nnd door fac

comes from a pure mountain stream
1000 feet above tho town.
It's a first elacs young city, U
Seward and a very nrriiir'one toilav.
