Wf 10 call it downright cruel those covert insinuations
V that the news from Constantinople is not quite as
accurate as tniurht be desired bv the truth-loving world
public. We blush for our contemporaries who are inclined
to sneer at the following most interesting intelligence in
recent cable dispatches:
Constantinople Tho land attack of the nlltes upon tho Dardanelles
has completely collapsed. Tho Turkish army has driven from tho Onlllpolls
peninsula nil tho SO.OOO troops which landed there. Tho Turks captured
151,000 Trench and British troops and S000 were driven Into tho sea.
Why anybody should doubt the truthfulness of the Con
stantinople news writers is a mystery to us. Our journal
istic brethren in the Ottoman country have a reputation
for strict veracity that is famous. As evidence of this, we
quote the following, clipped from a recent issue of the most
reliable of Turkish dailv newspapers, the Constantinople
"Lkdam":
The lands near tho Suez canal nro now all occupied by the Ottoman
troops. Tho Indian troops deserted to us and oven tho Sues company's
boats were removed from tho canal. When the news of tho success of
our Army of Salvation reached Aleppo, tho schools wcro all given a
holiday and tho people celebrated the victory.
Thus our contemporary on the banks of the Bosphorus
"scooped" the whole world. Il'udeed, no other newspaper
in the world has yet had the enterprise to publish this im
portant news of the sweeping triumph of the Turks over
the English in Egypt. You can't afford to be without the
"Ikdnni." But let us quote from the Constantinople
"Servct-i-Fuuoun," another member of the Turkish
brotiiernooa ot exact and mistwortny jeurnalism:
His Islamic Majesty. Wllhelm II. has mado his stato entry Into tlio
conquered French capital. In celebration of tho German victory over
Paris, his majesty mado a speech from tho throne In the former French
chamber ot deputies. After its conclusion ho offered tho Imperial hand
to bo kissed by tho French cx-deputles, who wcro deeply touched by this
magnanimity!
Can you doubt it? Are you still blind to the virtues of
the reliable news writers of Constantinople? Do you still
question that S000 or SO.OOO or even S,000,0(X) British and
French were driven into the sea?
But as a parting fling at your rank skepticism we
quote from the "llanuuilar Gazettassi," a newspaper
which is published largely for the ladies of Constantinople.
Says the Gazcttassi:
Tho harem of his Islamic Majesty. William II, the principal officers
of the harem and tho German general staff are expected lu Constan
tinople early this spring. Ten powerful urcaunaugnis captured irom
tho Drltlsh will escort the Imperial harem! ,
Oh, you "William!
