THE MEXICAN QUESTION
OF all )liu'0s on this eruol, inhuuian earth, Moxieo has
boon for yeara tho blaekest spot. Tho hloodt hirst i
uoss of its rulfhg oasto. their anti-human attitude towards
tlio laboring olassos was unequaled even in Dahomey. That
it has hoon such a country is largely tho fault of tho poojilo
of tho Tnitod States f Ameriea. 'L'ho Aniovioan people
have long looked upon the Mexican people as existing only
for exploitation. That it might ho necessary to murder
and kill a few thousand "greasers" occasionally in the.
work of exploitation has hoon doomed inovitahle.
In no win has this nation endeavored to point the wav
to higher plane or citizenship and national life for the
Mexican people. Some of our capitalists havo hoon the
greatest exploiters of that
its public ofticials.
From beneath the mile-deep oppression of ignorance,
poverty and superstition there has broken through a revo
lutionary spirit of the highest and noblest motives, that
has resolved to destroy the barbarous, medieval child-murderers
that have ruled that country so long in the interest
of foreign concessionaires or die in such numbers in the
attempt that the rulers will have few to rule and exploit.
From the people of this country these people ought, to
receive encouragement, but instead tney areotten met with
threats of intervention and restoring order.
"Why should wc restore order in Mexico? Because a
few have gone down into that land and bought or stolen
some property, it is insisted wc should send our army and
protect our citizens.
By the same right. Great Britain, France or Germany
were justified in intervening in this country during tho
civil war. We have the same causes to intervene in Europe
now and restore order. Ono of our citizens has been killed
and what is still worse and more heartrending from the
modern viewpoint, some of the property of one of our
trusts has been destroyed a vessel worth dollars has been
sunk. Yet no one, not even the Oregonian, advocates
armed intervention in Europe.
This is for two reasens: First, that wo are not big
enough from the military or naval point, and, second, we
would have a hard time to steal anything in Europe if we
did intervene.
President "Wilson and Seerctarv Bryan are the daily
targets for the abuse of a portion of tho partisan press in
this country, the nastiest one of the lot being a newspaper
of this state, that unfortunately outside the state is still be
lieved to voice the sentiment of the people of Oregon. The
people of this country have long been used to the unfair
ness of partisan papers, and especially to the untruthful
ness of the plutocratic republican charax'ter-assassinating
papers that arc trying to regain their control of that party,
but in the present attacks upon the administration's Mex
ican policy the depths of political degradation have been
reached.
As to the alternative to the president's policy, we can
have war, and that means the death, the killing of hun
dreds of thousands of the citizens of this country and
Mexico. A newspaper that day after da' pursues a policy
that if followed out would mean the killing of hundreds of
thousands for partisan effect, is a menace to decency and
honesty in government.
There are doubtless those who would welcome a war
with Mexico. Plutocracy in this country through such a
war would not only find opportunity to make billions from
government contracts, but also find respite from the
statesmanlike attempts of the president to shake loose
the hold they have upon the lives and liberty of the Amer
ican people.
Doubtless there arc those who would not only like to
see "Diaz back in Mexico, with his army shooting down
thousands who objected to being evicted from their lands,
in the interest of the concessionaires, but would also like
to see a Diaz in this country. "With a Diaz in the white
house commanding the army, we could soon realize our
governor's dream of Chinese labor and overflowing
prisons.
Is it not barely possible that those who want firmed
intervention in Mexico want it for the restoration of the
Diaz regime, not only for the effect in that country, but
for the possible effects in this country?
The plutocracy of Germany wanted war, because they
feared the growing strength of the socialists would de
prive them of their stolen prerogatives. Js it not possible
that the plutocracy of this country will yet involve this
country in it war in order to divortthe president from his
efforts to undo the work of the past thirty years that has
built up the trusts and monopolies that 'have well-nigh
throttled opportunity and business freedom? Perhaps
the Oregonian is'procooding according tp program.
