UTT is time to 'got out of tho fool's paradise of believing
that wealth aiitl prosperity mv oroutod lv logislu
lion. Those aro tho words otMamos .1. Hill before the Ameri
can Newspaper Publishers' association in an address in
wJdeh he declared that a determined effort is to be made
by tariff beneficiaries and their political henchmen to
make the tariff the issue in the next campaign.
The idea that the government creates prosperity- is a
survival of the Indian medicine man dope. It is kept alive
by special interests Lor the purpose ot exploiting the many
for the benefit of the few. Special fa vol's to the i'cw creates
prosperity only for the few at the expense of the many.
Ir. Hill speaks with the voice of authority of one who
sees the wheels go round from the inside. The old stand
pat leaders are busy organising to reform the old line re
publican party, easting aside progrossivoism and falling
back on a frankly sordid program of tariff subsidy and
special privilege to be glossed over by the old-time talk of
"full dinner pail."
lr. Hill shows that more tariff revision, good or bad,
will be bad for business, worse for laber: that it unsettles
business and clouds the future. He shows that artificial
stimulation has already given tho United States a M per
cent overproduction, and that with toreign markets im
poverished by war, thus reducing their purchasing power,
further tariff stimulation would be folly.
Mr. Hill knows whereof he speaks. No one is in closer
touch with financial loaders or with the people. He does
not hesitate to say that the program proposed by the reac
tionaries is one that will not promote prosperity either for
capital or labor.
The evils that would follow the attempts of the reac
tionary program would be a pretty high price to pay for
the dubious pleasure of seeing the old crowd back at the
trough.

TI1R Washington dispatches relate that the South
American republics have all agreed to adopt the plan
of Mr. Bryan regarding international affairs. When Mr.
Bryan first made public his scheme it was received with
hoots of derision by the republican press. Doubtless they
were chagrined because the plan had not been put forth by
some representative of plutocracy. As treaty after treaty
was negotiated along the line of Mrr Bryan's proposal
with several of the lesser nations tho ridicule continued.
Then came the awful eruption in Europe, involvincr half
tne world. The horrible carnage of the world-wide war
seems to have silenced both the knave and fool critics of
Bryan's noble effort. No longer do we hear of the futility
of the attempt to stop international murder. The example
before us is too staggering. Amid the conflict of nations
Mr. Bryan has gone steadily forward to the accomplish
ment of what will be the grandest work-of any citizen of
the earth since Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declara
tion of Independence the maxim, "that all men arc created
equal."
When the European nations have completed their
saturnalia of blood the undeceived peoples who escape the
slaughter will embrace this beneficent plan that will free
the world from the blood lust forever. When this is done
tho name of William Jennings .Brvan will be iinpcrishablv
written in the history of the world and civilization, while
he will still bo traduced by the capitalistic press of this
country, because it knows no ideals, lives without morals
and would sacrifice even the lives of its citizens to its one
only vision, its only hope, its dream, its god the almighty
dollar.
